Joel Gauthier is being remembered as a cycling enthusiast after he died from injuries suffered in Friday evening's storm.

The 18-year-old Rockland native was cycling through Ottawa's Vincent Massey Park on Friday when he and a friend stopped under a tree to put on rain gear.

Both Gauthier and the tree were then struck by lightning.

Gaithier died in hospital Saturday morning.

His uncle Mario Beauchamp said he was an electrical engineering student at Carleton University and cycling was his passion.

The storm also ripped off part of an eastern Ottawa apartment's roof, with wind and lightning causing major power outages.
