One of the biggest events in Ottawa this weekend is straight out of the pages of a comic book.

(No, it's not the opening of The Avengers; that was last week.)

The city's first ever ComicCon runs this weekend at the CE Centre, with a sold-out first day meaning big lines outside the south Ottawa event space.

Once inside, fans could meet stars like original Incredible Hulk Lou Ferrigno, William Shatner and Cassandra Peterson, aka Elvira.

"I think Ottawa's a great town, they have die-hard fans, they're so excited for the first time of a comic convention," Ferrigno said. "I think it's a great, positive, exhilarating event for the city."

Another draw is to show off your geek-chic style with your best costume.

"It's an opportunity for the grownups to be kids again and to dress up as our favourite characters and dress up our children," said Carmen Larsen.

"(It's) long overdue, Ottawa obviously is finally embracing its inner geek," said Rob Uhrig. "Now we don't have to travel to Montreal and Toronto"

Ticketholders can get a comic-style piece of art done on the spot on Artist Alley.

"It's usually a real surprise for them to see the work being made," said Dale Eaglesham. "How it's done, how fast it gets done, all of that stuff. So to interact that way is completely different."

For a $20 donation to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's disease research, fans of Back to the Future can sit in the time-travelling Delorean from the movie.

"Seeing it as a kid on the big screen and then seeing it again, I'm just reliving my childhood," said one man.

While Saturday was sold out, there are still a few tickets left for Sunday.

The Ottawa ComicCon runs until 5 p.m.
