A man whose car jumped a curb and killed a couple waiting at a bus stop in downtown Ottawa in September 2010 pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving causing death Wednesday.

Simon Banke, 22, admitted he was driving dangerously fast and out of control before he struck Paul and Sherianne Regnier, parents of three daughters.

"Mr. Banke is extremely and profoundly remorseful for the consequences to the Regnier family," said lawyer Joe Addelman.

On the night when the couple was killed, witnesses said Banke was driving at a dangerously high speed. When he got out of the car after running into the couple, they told Banke he was "driving like an idiot."

The Regnier family said they are grateful they won't have to go through a long trial but they are still stunned by the loss of their loved ones.

"There is no reason why this boy drove that way. That night he knew the roads were bad. There was just no reason for him to do that," said Paul's sister Suzanne Baker. "I'm just so afraid he's going to get slapped on the wrist."

Banke is set to be sentenced in September. He is also facing a civil suit from the Regnier family.
