The family of Hélène Campbell says she's surpassing expectations, despite a few early setbacks.

"She tries to dance already to music and she does her treadmill to music and the first song this morning was Justin Bieber ‘If I were your boyfriend', so you can imagine the arms went up," says Manon Campbell, Hélène's mother.

Her parents held a news conference in Toronto, along with her surgeon, to update the 21-year-old's progress. She received the new set of lungs on April 6.

"She passed her first night without any support from a ventilator, this is definitely a major milestone moving forward," said Dr. Tom Waddell, Hélène's surgeon at Toronto General Hospital.

But, he added, there have been issues with rejection and infection, common problems with all organ transplants.

Campbell's parents say messages of support and encouragement are getting her through the recovery.

"She's a naturally positive kid, but the support she's gotten has really buoyed her on this journey," said Alan Campbell, Hélène's father.

Campbell received international attention after she enlisted the help of celebrities Justin Bieber and Ellen DeGeneres to promote organ donation.

Ronnie Gavsie from Trillium Gift of Life Network says her time in the spotlight has worked.

"We would see on average 50 new registrations a day. In the week following Hélène's contact to Justin Bieber we saw over 1500 that week."

Campbell's dad says he's inspired by the impact the campaign has had.

"On April 14th, this was an obituary:‘Terry's wish to donate his organs was inspired by the @alungstory Hélène Campbell Organ Donation Campaign,' wow."

Campbell's surgeon says he hopes she will be moved out of the ICU in the next few days.

April 18-24 is National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week.
