People in Ottawa are rallying together to raise money for 21-year-old Hélène Campbell, the Ottawa woman who recently underwent a double lung transplant.

On Saturday morning, dozens attended a pancake breakfast fundraiser organized by the West Barrhaven Community Association.

The breakfast raised money for Campbell's family.

"It means the world as a dad…seeing people rallying around to help my daughter,"said Alan Campbell, Hélène's father.

Campbell received her new set of lungs on April 7 at Toronto General Hospital. She has been there ever since as doctors monitor her recovery.

Hélène's mother, Manon, is temporarily living in Toronto while Hélène recuperates.

"We hope to be able to provide a nice donation to the Campbell family to help relieve some of the stress so that Hélène can focus on recovery," said James Gilliland of the West Barrhaven Community Association.

Hélène has recently suffered a few setbacks in her recovery.

Earlier this week, she had to have a breathing tube re-inserted after having problems breathing on her own.

She is also being treated for a lung infection.

Hélène's father says despite the ups and downs, her condition appears to be improving.

"The trend is upward, so we're very pleased about that," he said. "She was moving towards death and now she is moving towards life. The gift of life is appreciated more than words can express."

Campbell made world headlines after getting pop star Justin Bieber to endorse her organ donation campaign. She also appeared on the Ellen show to promote organ donation.

Campbell's story inspired Polina Andrievskaia to become an organ donor.

The 18-year-old is working on a video with messages of support for Hélène.

"We hope this video will inspire people to think about organ donation… Hélène has really inspired everyone to contribute," said Sarah Singh, who is also working on the video.

The fundraiser kicked off national organ donor and tissue awareness week.

Another fundraiser for Hélène's family is scheduled for Sunday, April 22. "Bands for Breath" will start at 2 p.m. at Greenfields Pub in Barrhaven.
