Organ donor advocate Hélène Campbell is walking and breathing on her own as she continues to recover from a double lung transplant.
Her family posted an update on their website on Friday, saying the 20-year-old Ottawa native walked around her unit of a Toronto hospital Wednesday then sat in a chair for the second time post-surgery.
Her breathing tube was then removed on Saturday, as she tweeted that afternoon.
"Oh my gosh, what a great day! No more tubes, I can breathe!" she said.
They said she's had difficulty getting sleep because of her busy unit at the Toronto General Hospital, noise from equipment and strong anti-rejection medication.
Campbell underwent her double-lung transplant last Friday, with doctors saying she'll likely be hospitalized for at least a month.
However, two days after her surgery she was opening her eyes and communicating with an alphabet board despite doctors saying she'd likely be in a medically-induced coma for three to four days.
Campbell rose to fame after running successful social media campaigns to get Justin Bieber, Ellen DeGeneres and other celebrities to tweet about organ donor awareness.
She had learned she would need the transplant last fall after being diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a condition that causes scarring on the lungs.
There is still a risk her body could reject the organs or she could develop an infection.
