Ottawa police are investigating the disappearance of $70, 000 from the bank account of the parents' council of Rockcliffe Park Public School, located in one of Ottawa's wealthiest enclaves.

In a letter to parents, the Rockcliffe Park Public School Council Executive wrote the group first noticed financial irregularities in their bank account in February. Upon the discovery, council officials initiated an audit of their finances and reported the missing funds to police.

The council said the financial irregularities aren't associated with Rockcliffe Park Public School accounts, nor do they reflect on the accounting practices of the school administration or staff.

The programs that might be impacted by the loss include the milk and pizza programs as well as the Homework Club.

Last week, a different letter was sent to parents with children in the homework club by Hasan Zaidi, president of the Bettye Hyde Cooperative Nursery School which facilitates the program.

Zaidi wrote the nursery school hadn't received payment from Rockcliffe Park Public School for the homework club since Dec. 1, 2011 and can no longer afford to run the program. It will be closed beginning May 4, more than a month early.

A meeting for parents was scheduled to take place at the school Tuesday night.
