Cleanup is underway after a fire caused half a million dollars worth of damage to a suspected former Hell's Angels "castle" in Quebec Wednesday morning.

Outaouais police said they got a call from a neighbour to 122 rue Lafreniere in Val-des-Monts around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Fire departments from Val-des-Monts, l'Ange Gardien and Cantley responded to the fire in the landmark home about 20 kilometres northeast of Gatineau.

The owner was home at the time, but escaped without injuries.

Police said the current owners didn't have criminal connections but didn't rule out the possibility it was a Hell's Angels hangout in the 1980s and 90s.

The cause is still under investigation and police said the castle-like building was being renovated at the time.

The rest of the building is being knocked down Wednesday.
