A local girl's campaign for organ donation awareness took her to a surprise appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Thursday.

A short time after getting the attention of Justin Bieber, Hélène Campbell set her social media sights on the popular talk show.

Thousands of tweets mentioning the @alungstory account or the hashtag #beanorgandonor were sent to the host's account in hopes of using DeGeneres' influence to promote registering as a donor.

Ellen surprised Campbell on-air over Skype on the show that aired Thursday.

"You asked me to help you get the message across and I want to help you do that," said DeGeneres to Campbell, who thought she would be Skyping with a producer from the show.

"By the way, I am an organ donor and I have been an organ donor for a long, long time," the host added.

DeGeneres also promised to fly Campbell and her mother to California when Hélène's double-lung transplant happens.

"I'm very excited, that's definitely one of the other many things to look forward to post-transplant," Campbell told CTV Ottawa a short while later. "But we're going to focus on getting (the transplant) first."

Since her first online blitz targeting Bieber, more than 2,000 Ontarians have signed up to be an organ donor.

"If it wasn't for Ottawa (the support) wouldn't be as strong because that's where it started," she said. "The root started there."

Campbell and her mother moved to Toronto last month to await the transplant, which needs to be done since Hélène lost elasticity in her lungs.

However, Campbell recently learned her lung disease is becoming more aggressive, with her lung capacity down to 21 per cent.

Canada has a low rate of organ donation compared to other developed countries.

"I get a lot of people who want to meet me or do something, but you're doing this not to help yourself," Campbell said. "You're on a list and it's going to happen for you, but you want to help others."

She said her next goal is to raise the profile of Ontario's Torch of Life run for organ donor awareness, which hits Ottawa March 30.
