A west Ottawa family is thanking firefighters for limiting the damage of a massive fire on their property Saturday night.

Jennifer Higginson said she called 911 from inside her house on Kinburn Side Road, 200 feet away from where a metal shed filled with chemicals was burning.

"Once we saw the flames coming out of both sides, we knew we lost the shop," she said of the building used to make biodiesel. "But the wind was blowing the right way, not towards the home or the windmill so at least we were lucky that way."

"It was a hard thing to see, that's for sure," said Art Higginson.

There were also 20,000 litres of fuel in tanks beside the shed which firefighters said they were trying to keep the flames away from.

That building, a trailer and a vehicle were destroyed, but everything else on the property was saved.

"Our main concern right now is the furnace in the shop heated our house," Higginson said.

The fire caused $375,000 damage and sent Higginson's mother to hospital with high blood pressure.
