The Rideau Canal is closed again because of weather, a day after it re-opened in time for the start of NHL All-Star weekend.

The National Capital Commission announced the closure Friday morning after residents woke up to a messy mix of snow and ice on roads, sidewalks and skateways.

"These are Palladium (boots) and they're no good for the season, but they're fashionable so that's what I'm wearing," said one woman. "Every day you just layer on and dress up and then you take layers off throughout the day, that's pretty much how we're getting through the winter."

Tourists, many of them in Ottawa for the NHL All-Star Game, had mixed opinions on the weather.

"I think it's fun for a few days but I wouldn't want to live here," said Alysia Hall from Tampa Bay. "Sorry, I love the sunshine and hockey together."

"We love it," said Renee Deluca of Philadelphia. "We rarely get the snow so we're enjoying it. It's a beautiful, beautiful city."

The conditions delayed OC Transpo buses and caused significant crashes when a car rolled over on Highway 174 between Montreal Road and Jeanne D'Arc Boulevard in east Ottawa, with no injuries.

A tractor-trailer also jackknifed on King Edward Avenue in downtown Ottawa, cutting off traffic to the MacDonald Cartier Bridge, and the Richmond Road on-ramp to the 417 was closed because of flooding for a short time.

School buses were cancelled and several exams were postponed, with delays reported at the Ottawa International Airport for both arrivals and departures.

The Energizer Night Skate, a fundraiser for the Sens Foundation that was to take place on the canal, has been moved to the Rink of Dreams at City Hall.

With all the weather-related challenges, Ottawa residents said they were trying to get on with their days as best they could.

"I'm actually going to get my hair cut," said one woman trudging through puddles. "I'm going to keep going and suffer frozen feet for a while."

The freezing rain warning ended mid-afternoon, but there is a winter storm warning in place for Upper Gatineau.
