The Ottawa Humane Service is asking for the public's help to find the owner and person responsible for the traumatic death of a cat last week.

They said they found a cat whose legs were tied together with an electrical cord on Friday around 1:30 p.m.

It was in a dumpster behind an apartment building at 1411 Morisset Avenue.

The spayed, female calico cat died from severe trauma and was found with "extensive" internal bleeding and a lacerated spleen and kidney.

An Ottawa Humane Service (OHS) investigator said the five-year-old cat was put in the dumpster between Jan. 17 (when it had last been emptied) and Jan. 20.

"We've checked the OHS lost records and there are no reports of a lost cat matching its description, so we're looking for any information that will lead us to the owner of the deceased cat as well as whoever is responsible for this horrific abuse," said Miriam Smith, OHS Rescue and Investigation Services Inspector.

The news release said willfully killing, maiming, wounding, or injuring animals that are kept for a lawful purpose, or causing unnecessary pain, suffering or injury to an animal is a criminal offence that can lead to up to five years in prison.

If you have any information you can call OHS at 613-725-3166 extension 224.
