Ottawa police are looking for a man suspected of stabbing a young woman in an attempted sexual assault Saturday night.

They said the woman was waiting for the bus on Iris Street in west Ottawa when a man with a knife led her into the woods and tried to sexually assault her.

The woman was able to resist him and call for help, but suffered a non life-threatening knife wound.

Police said they got the call around 10:13 p.m. to Iris Street and the Transitway, a bus stop locals said isn't well-lit.

"It's dark, no one's out here, if anyone came I wouldn't be safe," said Alexa Joial. "There should be more lights and cameras."

"There are times I will walk in the middle of the street, always looking around . . . at the end of the day I'm scared," said Liz Majic, who uses that exact stop once a week. "Perhaps it is the responsibility of OC Transpo to protect people who are walking alone at night."

The suspect is described as an 18 to 20-year-old Caucasian man standing between five feet seven inches and five feet nine inches tall with a medium build, brown eyes and dressed in black.

Anyone with information can call the Ottawa police's sexual assault/child abuse unit at 613-236-1222 extension 5944 or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477.
