Ottawa police are investigating the city's 11th murder of 2011 after an elderly woman was killed Monday at an Ottawa retirement home.

The dead woman has been identified as 82-year-old Doreen Flann with her husband, 82-year-old Ian Flann, injured and in police custody.

The Ottawa police's major crimes unit is investigating, along with a forensics unit.

They have not laid any charges.

"The investigation is actually in its infancy," said Sgt. David Veinotte with the Ottawa police. "We're just starting to get facts together and interview witnesses and family members."

Tuesday police expanded their investigation to a retirement home in Stittsville where Ian Flann lived.

Neighbours said the couple recently moved out of a home they both shared in the Riverside area where they'd lived since the 1960s.

None of them wanted to appear on-camera but they told CTV Ottawa's Ellen Mauro they were a lovely couple and were shocked at what happened.

"They were the grandest couple," said one.

Retirement home itself not under investigation

Longfields Manor is a long-term care facility in the city's southwest end that provides 24-hour care to people who can no longer take care of themselves or use assisted living.

"We are deeply saddened that a resident has passed away under unexpected circumstances," said the home's executive director. "We are fully co-operating with the police and Ministry of Health investigations."

She added the home itself isn't under investigation.

Those with family in the home said it's a good place to live.

"My heart goes out to the family and also to the home," said Gayle O'Connor. "And to all the pople who work hard to make it such a special place."

Some of them said they were still worried.

"I'm only a niece of his but I'm sure that his children were much more shocked and worried at the very beginning," said Vicki Aubin, whose uncle lives at Longfields Manor. "You wonder how safe it is for people who have no defence of their own."

Ian Flann's brother Bruce said he wouldn't give further comment to CTV Ottawa, but had already spoken publicly.

He said he didn't know of any strife in the couple's long marriage, but said Doreen "wasn't exactly herself" lately without elaborating further.
