About 300 protesters demonstrating against recent election results in the Congo clashed with police and created traffic chaos in downtown Ottawa Friday.
Police used pepper spray on the crowd shortly before 4:30 p.m. when the group arrived at the Congolese Embassy on Range Road in Sandy Hill.
The protesters are opposed to the re-election of Congolese president Joseph Kabila. They accuse him of mass violence, and election rigging.
The demonstration happened on the same day the Congolese Supreme Court declared Kabila the official winner of the election.
They began their protest early Friday afternoon on Parliament Hill before heading to the British Embassy on Elgin Street, and then the American Embassy on Sussex Avenue.
The march created traffic chaos as demonstrators blocked several intersections on their way from the downtown core to Sandy Hill.
OC Transpo buses were diverted to Mackenzie Bridge for much of Friday afternoon.
