Yoga pants targeted in dress code enforcement

Students at St. Joseph high school in Barrhaven have been told not to wear popular form-fitting yoga pants unless covered by a long shirt.
According to officials with the high school, most yoga pants are too tight and revealing at the front and back of the pant, which is in violation of the school's dress code.
The school's administration issued the following statement in its daily announcements, according to one student on Facebook:
"Please remind your students that appropriate clothing is required. For our ladies, if they are wearing 'Lulu Lemon' pants or 'jeggins' of sorts, a long shirt covering them is required, otherwise they will be sent home and asked to change . . ."
School officials say students will be given the option to go home and change but if they continue to violate the school's dress code, other disciplinary actions could be taken.
Many female students are risking suspension by rebelling and wearing the pants without shirts that cover their waist.
One parent sent CTV Ottawa a letter she wrote to the school. Kathie Cloutier says administration should be more concerned with the quality of the lessons delivered to students rather than her daughter's appearance.
"This is just as ridiculous as the school that recently banned certain types of balls because a parent got hit in the head with one. If you say it out loud – it really does sound silly – ‘my daughter's high school banned yoga pants,'" wrote Cloutier.
"As far as I'm concerned, if the schools keep pushing these ridiculous rules – all you will succeed in doing is pushing our childrens' interest in school right out the door!"
The Ottawa Catholic School Board contacted CTV Ottawa to say this is simply an example of the dress code being enforced.

Betcha ten to one it was someone complained due to their religious beliefs that women etc must be modestly dresses.
Jean Guy
too tight ??
what a phony excuse !!
what next,no more chest hugging sweaters and short pants in the summer.
and how about the males, when they wear tight pants!! ?
get real and start to look at what type of books and studies are being read instead of clothing manufacturers !!
what a waste of taxpayers money for this school systeme !
Sarah
I agree with this high schools observation.
It is not that the children are not allowed to wear the pants, instead they are allowed just with an appropriate shirt.
It is actually disappointing that parents are not more concerned with how there children dress too provocative.
maggie
yoga pants are NOT regular wear... they are for yoga exercising... NOT for school, not for work ... etc
Time for uniforms for ALL schools !
saves money - saves hassels - save competition - etc etc
diane compton
Can we band the yoga pants in the grocery stores too!

i think its pathetic that they are more concerned about dress code rather than the students education. i personally went to st joes from grade 7 -12 and graduated from there last year and just over the course of grade twelve i had been sent home for dress code various times, in which some suspension i received were more than one or two days.they also don't allow students to wear tank tops and certain skirts and shorts, which leaves us not being able to wear shorts, skirts, ripped jeans, leggings, jeggins, lulu lemon pants, and tank tops. as a teenage year old girl what else is there to wear? its not easy to find clothes for the high school age group when you're not able to wear so many things. another thing from my own experience is that they try giving the students baggy sweats to wear instead of the "inappropriate bottoms" which is discussing who wants to wear sweatpants that someone else wore? who knows if they have been washed. they also asks the students to change and if they do change at the school they make the students give them there "inappropriate pants" until the end of the day and in some cases the following day. they need to relax and let the students be. if someone is walking around with there butt hanging out of there skirt or boobs popping out of there top then yes ask them to change but anything else is pushing it. now that I'm in college and we are all able to wear whatever we feel there is no issues and it is not often you see people dressed "inappropriately". some work places such as retail /department stores even allow lulu lemon pants.
Former High school student
I graduated high school last year, and these Lulu Lemon yoga pants were widely popular. Nearly all the girls at my previous high school would wear these. As a female student myself, I was personally shocked that someone would wear that to school. Would you wear clingy yoga pants that highlight every bit of your behind to work? No! Talk about unprofessional. A school is a learning environment, not a place to go to showcase what "your mama gave you" Going up the stairs at school and finding a yoga clad pair of butt cheeks in front of my face was extremely unpleasant. I strongly support this high school's choice to get rid of yoga pants.
Awww...
I know they don't seem to leave much to the imagination, but that's okay...I've seen worse.
How's that song go? "Have you seen the muffin woman, the muffin woman"...ooppss, sorry, It's the muffin man, right...my bad.

I wouldn't look at it as "the school is banning yoga pants". While I agree adults should be able to wear what they want, and I do, we are talking about children here. If the school believes it is not appropriate, and I tend to agree that tight-fitting pants will only bring on a slue of judgements and comments from peers. Really what the school is saying is: "we will not allow other students become distracted by those wearing inappropriate clothing, nor will we allow girls to be the target of sexual harassment because of this type of clothing". The job of the school is to protect children; we as parents always complain about them not doing their job, and here they are doing their job. If it means the school has to teach all students and parents that children are not to be sexualized by banning yoga pants, then so be it.
Deanna
Oh wait.....what about those really short uniform skirts that the girls wear? Shouldn't they be banned too? And how long were the yoga pants being worn before they banned them. If for awhile, then my question would be, why now and not when they first started wearing them? Did no teachers or other students notice them being worn and miraculously just got their eyesight back? Totally ridiculous and archaic....it's 2011 people!
Genevieve
I believe schools should be cracking down on drug posession and harassment rather than banning lulus. This is so ridiculous. What next, no sharp pencils?
Wilson
As a student at St. Joe's ... I personally think this is just sad...I won't be able to concentrate if they continue to inforce this silly ban.
Christopher
i WENT to this high school a few years ago, the administration staff has gone off the deep end. They are more power hungry then they ever were. Lulus are nothing out of the ordinary. And i agree, the lessons are HIGHLY compromised.
Kaela McDonald
as a st joes graduate from last year, i had been in trouble for dress code more than once, the administration told my friend and i "its not because its inappropriate for your age, it distracts the boys and we are getting you ready for the work place" i personally work at a retail store in which i am allowed to wear lulu lemon pants. and as far as distracting the boys go, if they want to look they will find a way to. in conclusion this is absolutely ridiculous and unless there going to make the students wear uniforms they truly have no say in what they wear.
L - Ottawa
Funny how it seems the male commenters so far are for this and the female commenters are so far in agreement with the ban....hmmm....I wonder why? This is not an equality or religious issue - it's icky to see a bunch of little school kids sexualizing themselves - yoga pants or anything else. I personally do not feel like it's attack on my rights or religion. Let's teach girls they don't need to desperately seek out attention from their peers since I bet this is the majority of the reason why these girls wear these pants in the first place. It's gross. They can save it for when they are adults......
Christine
I'm not really sure why a parent would be mad at this.. I'm pretty sure your daughter has more than a 95$ pair of lululemon yoga pants. Before, tights were worn under skirts, but it's rather funny how they've evolved to just being worn with a shirt..
MJS
I agree with the school's stand on the "yoga" pants. They are not flattering on ANYONE and show a bit too much that I don't want to see. My son's high school has uniforms which is fantastic. Even though my daughter's school does not have uniforms, I definitely approve what she is wearing to school. What a person wears says quite a bit about their character. And those "Yoga" pants aren't saying anything positive!
Mike
Its a catholic school their lucky they don't have uniforms yet, they should did.
Leah
Honestly, just because a school cares about making sure kids dress properly, and not in a provocative manner doesn't connect at all with the idea that they don't care about the kind of education the kids are getting, that's a whole other issue to deal with. I agree, pants are fine so long as a shirt long enough is worn to cover up any revealing areas. Kids have to learn more self-respect, it really shouldn't a hard rule to comply with unless the girls hate giving up the fact that they won't be able to show off their butts or dress in provocative way to get some guy's attention.

I think its more the bigger picture thats the issue more then anything look at what schools are banning and or limiting its getting to the point where something needs to be done.
Emma nicholson
This has nothing to do with dress code violation. It has everything to do with a power struggle. The school is determined to make a point that they are in control of their students. All this is going to do is make us angry and more rebellious. I've been dressing myself since I was 5 years old. I'm now 17 years old and I am still perfectly capable of dressing myself appropriatly for school without the opinions of my mid-fourty year old princaple. Lulu lemons are comfotable and they are formal enough to wear to school. They are worn by the majority of girls at the school and worn more frequently than jeans. The school is taking too much concern with our clothes and not enough with the importent part: the learning. Many teachers at this school are not following the curriculum and are not properly preparing us for the real world and for some reason their priorities lie with our fashion? What is the school system coming to?
Trevor H.
Just like in England. Put in a dress code with school uniforms.
JC
These yoga pants are a lot more decent than the micro, micro uniform skirts worn by students at St. Mike's Catholic High School in Kemptville.
britney Kingsbury
another thing people need to realize is when students wear sweatpants to be comfy people constantly try to "pants" them as a joke so there fore girls wear lulu lemon as there the comfy pants. its seems like a topic that lead to a lot of discussions and gossip. people agreeing and disagreeing with the pants being banned. after hearing about the sexual assaults close to that schools area and they still send the students home. it will really be a discussion if another sexual assault happens to a girl who is walking home because of lulu lemon pants.
Jane
I'm glad the school is taking a stand on a fashion trend that is completely inappropriate. Not only are the pants too revealing, they are terribly unflattering. This is why it is a partial ban. Wear the pants, but cover up your "bits" with a longer top. Do these girls/women not look in the mirror and understand that yoga pants reveal body parts that are to be covered up? Would you walk around wearing only underwear? No. So, girls, take a close look in the mirror. And don't be surprised if the boys spend more time looking at your "parts" rather than your eyes. You advertised it.
R. May
I agree. These leggins are for yoga class, not to wear without a dress or a long sweater. Would you let your dauther go to school with tights/leotards?
brianmckinley@bell.net
Do not ban the tights..This is the fashion for the young people.
...
It's only pants people..get over yourself. I'm pretty sure there were other type of pants to wear before lulus were invented.
....
Does it REALLY matter - They are pants..
kristina
this is just stupid. i have nothing else to wear. my parents paid 100 $ for those pants and im not just gunna leave them at home. jeggings? those are practically jeans, i dislike jeans because they make my body look bad. some people just like wearing them because they're insecure about what their body looks like. not all the girls have camel toes and its extremely unreasonable for the school to do this. i am completely against this and all my friends are aswell. if we cant wear jeggings and lulus and leggings. what would they like us to wear? jeans? sweatpants? jeans are too heavy and im not going to wear sweatpants everyday. i only have 1 pair of sweats and absolutely no pairs of jeans. i have 5 pairs of jeggings and 3 pairs of lulus. my parents arent rich. its going to cost a lot of money to buy 4 pairs of jeans. this is ridiculous
Alyssa
Taking it as far as banning lululemon pants, any type of yoga pants, leggings and jeggings is a waste of time. People will still wear them, maybe instead of teaching us how to dress they should teach people, more importantly the guys, to stop being perverted pigs and find something else to look at. We have to shop around specifically for school? That's a waste of money, give us UNIFORMS or let us wear comfortable clothes. And for people saying yoga pants are unprofessional, we're STUDENTS not TEACHERS. Our clothes don't have to be "professional" because this isn't my or anyone else's profession.
Bob J
It's always dependent on the intention of how the pants are being worn. ie yoga before school. But if it's to show off body parts, then might be a good idea to lay rules down, but not completely remove them. Schools with religious figures in their names - over reactive sometimes...
Angelica
I disagree with what the school is saying because these pants are very popular. And they aren't showing anything, and if its really bugging you that bad, you shouldn't be looking there anyways... With my experiance its not banded at my school but other things are and I disagree with it, if you are wearing something and your parents agree with what your wearing then there should be no problem with this and if you are wearing something that is inappropriate then its your fault if you get called names and stuff.. I wear lulu lemon pants myself and they are comfortable pants that shouldn't be banded anywhere.
lulu lover
umm jean guy we cant even wear shorts in the summer they must be bello our knees, we honestly cant wear anything at our school anymore! no tight jeans, leggings, ripped jeans, pijama pants, low tops, tops off the sholdure, shirts mut be knee lenghts! Give us the unifomrs cause the only thing we can wear is snowpants
Perv
As a man, I find these pants very distracting and I understand why they'd ban it. Imagine a bunch of testosterone loaded boys being in a school full of girls with tight pants.. it's just not right!!
I have a hard enough time concentrating.!
blank
i think this is dumb because i go to st joes and the principal is wrong. nobody cares, there still gonna wear them.
LK
As a student in St Joes, i dont think it's right to ban us from wering lulus, or any skintight bottoms. What will we wear now?
Parent of former student
As a parent of 2 former students I would like to add my 2 cents into this. First of all banning the pants, short skirts, tank tops and whatever else they want to ban is cool. But first of all let me add that the TEACHERS should NOT be wearing the same clothing that they are currently trying to ban. Yes the teachers do wear this stuff so don't kid yourself all you other parents that have no
clue about this school. Just like the cell phones. That's right you have no idea how many of these teachers actually use there cell phone in class.
Go ahead with the ban but you should implement uniforms!!
sarah
I've seen girls look very pretty and clean dressed in a cute pair of tights, sweater and ugg boots . Also tighs are a an enexpensive stylish way to dress. I think its nice to see a style that is within everyones means. I remember when I was younger 200 dollar jeans were in style. Which few and far between were able to afford. With issues like bullying what's the big deal with tighs? Nobody has killed themselves over tighs.
SJHS Student
I find this ridiculous. I attend this high school and the dress code is somewhat unreasonably enforced. I have been told what I was wearing was inappropriate when another girl was wearing the exact same top and was left alone. I do not have time to be sent home for yoga pants. I would rather be in my university level courses than forced either to go home or sit in the office during my class. We are up late studying, doing assignments, etc, and I personally would like to be comfortable at school so i can focus on my studies. I wear yoga pants to work, at an outdoors store, and there is never a problem. I understand the whole modesty issue but expelling a student for wearing yoga pants, is, and even sounds ridiculous. This is why the school should input uniforms. But even after the general consensus of the student population was for uniforms, the administration said no. Uniforms would solve these problems and hypothetical reason why uniforms would not work is a ludicrous reason for not inputting them. What will st. joes ban next? Sweatpants?
Anon
As I am a student at St.joes I think they shouldn't ban lulu's because people at my school use them for also many reasons . not just for "showing them selves off" People sometimes wear them because they are comfortable or I would wear them because if im running late and might miss my bus they can match just about anything ! So I can just pull them on and be good to go . And the point is these shouldn't be a dress code. If there isn't uniforms why should there be such a strict dress code? And with the dress code it takes me at least a half an hour to find something to wear in the morning. They bann things that aren't even necessary, like ripped jeans? I got sent home for and they weren't even showing anything bad, but my knees? If a girl is has her boobs or butt hanging out then I understand but tight pants? Like last year our principle wanted to banned skinny jeans . But at least it's covering you butt. Now they want us wear "mom jeans " or boy pants.
Emily
I think this is rediculous. When your children come home from school, when you come home from work, do you slip into something comfy? Yes, because you feel better and are more open when you can be you comfortably. When I wear jeans to class, I spend more time thinking about the awkwardness of them then I do focused on the lesson at hand. When I wear my sweats or my yogas or whatever I feel comfortable, I can move freely and sit however I want and the clothes just follow my body, leaving me more capable to focus on my education. It might seem far fetched but i do studies like this for a living and you all should do your research!! The more comfortable someone feels, the more they will take in. Ps Brit/Chloe... Amazing!! ;)
*i***
i don't see how yoga pants are too revealing... i can see if booty shorts can be too revealing but yoga pants? what do they show? i see a lot of comments say that "they show too much of your butt" but don't all pants out line your butt? also, i find it stupid that even our own school gym shorts show more than these BALCK NON-SEE-THROUGH "yoga" pants...
#ridiculous
Emma
This is insane. As a former graduate I find this to be something our school should not be concerned with. I would never wear jeans to school, I found them uncomfortable to sit in during class for long periods of time. I would wear these "yoga pants" (which we all know are not just for yoga) or other types to school everyday. Our dress code has always been crazy and shouldnt we be focused on education? Why send students home for how they are dresses and have them miss class? There are more important things to be focusing on at school. Let people wear what they want, within reason. These pants arent that bad, relax.
Britney & Kaela
clearly students are going to wear the lulus to see if they actually get consequences, if a mom is buying there daughter lulus they will want them to be worn. by the rate the girls r going pretty soon they will all be expelled, just to make a point.
"STOP TAKING AWAY EDUCATION BECAUSE OF PANTS"
there is going to be tons of girls with no diploma because of the schools dress code. St.joes we are more than happy we got to get out of your school when we did. Continue making your point st joes ladies!!! KEEP IT UP :) also...st joes your a catholic school.. don't you "accept everyone"
Good call
Children wearing sexy revealing outfits is never proper, period. Anyone with half a brain, would not argue this point. If a teen turns 18, and is still a student in a high school, then they should also follow the dress code of that school.
victoria
I don't even live in Ottawa, and I find this to be absolutely ridiculous. My high school in Toronto tried to ban shorts in the summertime. For the record, not everything a woman wears is for male feedback. Maybe we wear it for our own comfort, style, and confidence? I hate how feminism is slowly losing its grip on society. Not everything we do is for the sake of the male gaze. I don't dress solely for your sexual preference. I like yoga pants. Is that a big deal? So please, the Catholic school board, all school boards, all religions, George Clinton, and a variety of other people who think they have the power to ban girls from wearing certain clothes - I don't do this for you, and never have. Thanks.
AA
Okay, I go to St Joes, and I personally think that everythings just gotton out of hand.
On one side, yeah, girls who show too much clevage, or wear too short of pants obviously should change. But I also find that St. Joes has gotton out of hand.
Expelling and Suspending students because of their clothing is completely ridiculous and out of hand. Lulu Lemons may be clingy, but girls only wear them because they're good quality, and super comfy. Instead of going to school with baggy sweats, and looking bad they wear these instead.
I don't think girls go to school intentionally thinking that boys or whoever will be looking at they're body shape, they just get dressed and go.
I also think that it shouldn't be up to the school to decide what the students wear. If the students' parents say it's fine to go dressed a certain way, I don't think the school should have a say in that.. The school's providing an education, not someones wardrobe.
I understand if a student shows up with a belly top, and short shorts that the school should get involved... But yoga pants shouldn't be a problem. Some work places require yoga pants to be worn.. I find that St. Joes focuses' too much of its time making sure no girls' shoulders are showing, or no ones wearing yoga pants or ripped jeans, then focusing on the education.
Because of this schools requirements, and each year something else getting banned, so much money has been wasted on more and more clothes for girls to wear, and it's getting ridiculous.
Not only myself, but many other girls have said this already: If the biggest concern is what we wear, instead of giving detentions, calling home, suspending and expelling, JUST GET UNIFORMS.
Patricia
I am in total agreement with kids putting on some proper clothes to school or anywhere to be exact. I am always amazed at what kids wear to school.. is anyone paying attention to what they leave the house in? 12 year olds look 16 with the makeup they are wearing and nothing like throwing on a pair of yoga pants to really put it all out there. They are banning them, they are asking kids to dress appropriately as to where they are. Is a long t-shirt that bad of a thing to drag on?
Graduated last year
Way to go kingsbury, second, "former high school student" we all know that's u camy. Just don't even try. This is clearly a stupid choice by faculty. Even a few of the female teachers wear Lulus for heaven sakes.
Our school mouse to be so amazing none of these junky rules, honestly it's all the new vice principals and principal. It's rediculous. I'm sick of it
Vancouver Maria
Its a Catholic school and they have dress standards. everyone knows this. If you don't like it go to a public school and wear what ever you want. For the media to make an issue about this is just plain silly.
Josh
Religious beliefs aside there is a reality that girls are encouraged by society to dress provocatively. Lulu lemons, yoga pants, and the like are at best meant for EXERCISE! Go to a gym and wear them.
They are much too revealing, it is essentially being naked. You can see exactly what their butt looks like for example.
I find it very disconcerting that parents are so absolutely blind to this fact. If they are defending their child like this then they are essentially saying "Ya, wear whatever you want. I approve boys lusting over you." Get real folks. Yoga pants are meant for exercise, not fashion!
Kezia Wynter
Seriously, if they fit to tightly obviously they don't fit, but other than that i don't see the problem? jeans fit tightly, some jogging pants do...if you think about it MOST OF GIRLS PANTS FIT TIGHTLY! i've seen some of the male teachers at that school wear tight fitting pants there as well! lets tell them to try and wear pants that are appropriate before we tell our girls to change out of their very suitable and high end pants.
Sonya
If you think that this is a 'serious' issue just imagine how bad it's going to be when the 80's come back in style. They might as well bring in uniforms at this rate, they've banned almost everything but sweatpants and sweaters.
Johnson
Yes the school should be focusing more on studies but the girls wearing the pants are dumb. Feminists fight for equality but still girls wear pants that highlight them as sex figures. The guys aren't agreeing with the highschool girls because they think the girls are right, they agree because the wanna look at their bum.
D
I personally think that it is just stupid of the catholic school board. The school is so focused on girls wearing tight pants, when half the boys in the school wear baggy jeans that hang BELOW their butts! The school doesn't do anything about the guys' choice of style. Girls should not be judged if their clothes are a bit tight and reveal their womanly features. The Catholic school board is teaching girls that they should be ashamed of their womanly figures. They should not have to hide these features, or be ashamed of them, they should embrace them and walk with confidence. It's not about showing off "tits and ass", it's about being proud of their gender and showing off their natural beauty. And if the school thinks the problem is that the girls are giving the wrong impressions to the teachers.. Well then the problem is obviously not the way the girls dress, it's the way the adults in the school react. If an adult male/female is attracted to a young girl wearing lulu lemons and assault occurs, the blame should not be put on the girl it should be put on the adult who clearly cannot control themselves around young teenagers. I myself went to St.Joseph highschool in Barrhaven for a few years. I know how it is there. I'm glad I don't go there and I don't have to put up with their stupid crap anymore.
student at st.joes
I think it's rediculous that they're more focussed on girls wearing yoga pants than they are on people coming to class high. Instead of telling us we're dressing inapropriatley, tell the boys to stop acting like pervs. I mean we wear them for comfort not to be 'sluts'. Not only are the banning yoga pants, they're banning sweat pants and skinny jeans. Jeans cost $40 for a good pair, some people can't afford to buy a whole new wardrobe just because guys get distracted easily.
rad
Its just a bunch of girls looking for drama. The school realized parents never taught you how to dress so no they're going to. In no way does this disrupt your concentration or social life. Stop crying and focus on getting into university because from experience, most girls that wear those shorts aren't of the caliber to get in.
Alyssa
Teach girls that they don't need to desperately seek out attention from their peers? We're trying to be comfortable. Sweat pants aren't permitted because they are "unprofessional" although school isn't our profession. Maybe they should teach the boys at our school to stop being perverted pigs, rather than banning our whole wardrobe. No sweat pants, yoga pants, ripped jeans, leggings or jeggings? Get real.
Chris m
If someone doesn't teach students ( like schools) no one will. School need to draw boundaries because parent don't. Then many young people show up in yoga pants (tattoos piecing ) and expects jobs. Then they aren't hired. Then they have to keep living with there parents. Maybe that what parents really want anyway.
Di
Where all the parents in all of this? I thought it was the job of a parent to make sure their children went to school dressed appropriately."If it's not for sale...don't advertise it." Kudos to the school.
Katie
I am a student at SJHS, and I think it is a good idea to ban these yoga pants.
First of all, Lulu Lemon is athletic wear, that you should not be wearing to school (with the exception of gym).
Also, many girls buy them a few sizes too small on purpose, to make their butt tight and get attention from guys (I am not saying ALL, just SOME).
I also think that we should get school uniforms, but there WILL be people hiking up the skirts(if there are skirts). On the bright side, with a uniform, I won't have to worry about what to wear in the morning!
I'm glad the principal addressed this. The dances aren't always exactly "PG".
Courtney Laverty
Ok, this is so stupid i go to st joes and honestly they should worry about their selfes and they dont have to look at our butts! So why dont they just stop and leave the students alone!
HS Students upset about the Ban
Be Happy your teachers are teaching you to dress professionally. If you plan on working anywhere other than a bar or retail store, you will be expected to wear business casual clothing. I assure you these yoga pants do not fit in that category.
Be Happy your teachers are teaching you to cover up your ass. Just because they make pants to show off your body, doesn't mean that you have to show it off to everyone. Having respect for yourself and your body is an important part of development and an important part of being professional. You can wear flattering pants, without showing off every crack and curve from front to back - that is really just tasteless. If your parents aren't teaching you this - I feel sorry for you.
Someone is teaching you guys guidelines to live by and that is important. Save the yoga pants for after school activities or the weekend - we do not need to see crotch and ass in the classroom.
Patrick
Anyone who says uniforms are the answer has never attended a school with uniforms.
Saying uniforms are the answer is simplistic and naive.
Emma Nicholson
I am a student at st.joeseph's catholic high school, and I have witnessed MUCH bigger problems within the school than our dress code. Teachers aren't teacher the curriculum, students are smoking drugs multiple times a day ON SCHOOL PROPERTY, teachers are centering students out and makeing them uncomfortable, student - teacher confidentiality is breeched all the time, but their main concern are my yoga pants (which teacher wear as well). What is the school board thinking? When the school as fixed all of the REAL problems and can honestly say that they are doing their very best to prepare us for post-secondary and the work force is when I will allow them to critique my fashion sense.
Melanie
As a teacher I think banning these yoga pants from school is ridiculous. They make the students feel comfortable, they do not show bare bums, or cleavage, in fact they cover up more than other clothing. For example, many high school students wear too short skirts and jeans that are too low. What are the students suppose to wear? I would rather see my students in lululemons than any other type of clothing. Also, school administrators should focus on other issues, such as bullying and the rise of suicides in teens.
English 101
Wow...just reading various comments from the graduates, it looks like fashion replaced the scholastic credits at the school.
NM
I totally agree with the schools decision. Not only should this type of attire not be worm to school but to the office as well. There is an appropriate way to wear leggings and most people do not know how. "Sexy" is not meant for school or work and it doesn't matter what body type you are-skinny or chubby. Keep gym wear for the gym. I'm actually surprised to see how these young girls are dressing-and surprised that parents allow it or support it.
Leggings, joggers, torn jeans, mini skirts, low waisted pants..not meant for school-come on people. Keep those clothes for the week-end. I think young girls think that they look good...but that is not real style. And to all those teenage girls out there reading this...please learn to have more respect for yourselves-If you cannot respect yourself, then no one will....
MissVixen
Leggings are NOT pants, people!! I usually shake my head at some of the rules schools enforce, but I whole heartedly agree with this one. They are meant to be worn with tunics/long shirts...I wish people would realize that!!!
Amanda
I think yoga pants should be banned as some of them are see threw, it gives the wrong message to other students and I for one would never let my future children wear such thing I wouln't want her to be judged as a "s- -t" as to the comments from a student "i cant concentrate if they keep making these stupid rules" is pathetic how can you not focus because of what you wear that is just childish yoga pants should be worn when ONLY doing gym etc... not sitting in glass wearing yoga pants makes young boys not able to FOCUS in school it makes them focus on what they can see threw the pants

I have heard of many teachers who find this revealing clothing worn by both the females and males offensive. Kids these days are finding it difficult that someone is actually trying to hold them to a higher standard. Kids don't like that because parents have allowed them too many freedoms without consequence and now because kids just can't handle that they are complaining about teachers being on a power trip. Take some pride in your appearance - there is no way you'd be allowed to wear camel toe clothing in any office or other grown-up work place so learn how to dress appropriately now and stop complaining

ok so i fid this stuid out of all the other issues our school has like bullying a real issue they deside to focase all there atentton on what pants people are waring yea they might say the can be distracking to boys but well we are learning we are all sitting down so wtf they cant see our asses and some techer dress in tighter close then lulus so wow what an exmaple

There is a rumor that they're going to ban skinny jeans and sweat pants for girls and guys which is totally ridiculous since all there will be to wear for girls is
-baggy pants
-track pants
-dress pants
And for the guys it will be
-baggy pants
So in conclusion all the faculty for this rule should take their head out if their bum because what girls or guys want everyone to think about them by what they wear is their choice and whatever comes with that decision is no one elses fault
Anne
There is no way I would let my daughter wear yoga pants to go to school, in fact, to anywhere else except for yoga. That's why we call them yoga pants!.
All school should adopt a uniform. The school is not a fashion event or somewhere students need to show off their bodies to attract attention.
Some of you are saying the school need to focus on the education they are giving and less on what students wear. I say this: students should focus on their education, and less on what they wear.

Recently, my daughter and I were driving along Prince of Wales Dr. We saw an elderly gentleman (well above age 80) jogging. He was wearing short spandex pants and a short tank top.My daughter, age 20 said "we can't unsee that can we" Not very many people have the body to wear spandex. So girls think about that when you put on your yoga pants. Your rear end probably doesn't look anywhere near as good as you think it does. Cover it up. Bouncing blubber, well you just can't unsee it.

This is so stupid, everyone wears tights. There are much better things for the school to be worrying about, like are the students actually getting an education. This is just going to cause students to rebel, or be even more turned off by school. ITS CALLED FASHION PEOPLE!!
Don
Nothing wrong with wearing yoga pants as long as the right person is wearing them, they are acceptable in todays society.... the scary ones that are over weight squeeze into them and that should be "banned", yuk!!!
lulus forever!
no, it has nothing to do with religious belifs, our vice principle is insane, and a hypocrite if you look at the way her own daughter dresses then this whole thing is even crazier!
hullo
I think this is SOOO stupid! Maybe yoga pants and jeggings are part of a woman's style, why the hell are you banning them?! Maybe instead of worrying about what girls put on themselves, concentrate on all the teachers that SUCK at their job.
Ottawa Guy
WTF does it matter what someone is wearing to school as long as they are going to school?!?
What about all the guys wearing their pants low with their asses/boxers hanging out? How many of them do you figure there are at this school on any given day? Why single out just the females?
I would be willing to bet money that the only reason this ban is taking place is that either a female student or female employee of the school complained out of spite/jealousy for not having the figure to be able pull off wearing something that form fitting themselves.
I say all the girls who go there should organize a day where they ALL wear the lulu's in protest. I mean its not like they can send the whole school home.
Betty Clarke
More reason for uniforms...if their parents were more responsible they would not let their children out in public in yoga pants. Kids think it is cool but they don't know any better & think they should be able to do what they want. Spare me the ridiculous reasons like you are expressing your selves. Grow up & realize when you get out in the real work world you won't be wearing them. Concentrate on getting good grades you'll be further ahead...seriously.
Jim
I agree with this decision. Tights aren't pants and usually EVERY school-inappropriate bit is shown. When an individual wears a size too small or without underwear, it shows too much. There are hundreds of different body types but only one pant type that unfortunately doesn't accommodate everyone.
wayne135
If you walk like a duck, talk like a duck and look like a duck then you are probably a duck. This type of clothing is so revealing it boders on the obscene and if thier mothers agree with this type of clothing than they are no better than the girls that wear them. It is time long due for a little discretion in our lives.
fed up
Good God is there any responsible parents anymore?, What happen to wearing decent clothing and for school and today young girls look like prostitutes . You go to school to learn and not to show off your body to boys.
NumberEleven
Overblown situation , stupid decision by the school.. the girls have the rights to wear what they want and it should be up to the parent to decide wether or not their daughter is dressed appropriately
St.Joes Student
This is not fair....They can not tell us to not wear lulus! Everyone wears them and we have been wearing them for years why start enforcing the rules now?? And its not like we are going to distract anyone when we are sitting in our CHAIRS during class. No one in St.Joes is going to listen. Join Lulus forever and where lulus from now till Friday!
Sarah - Ottawa
They are just comfortable black pants, schools are just trying too hard to control every aspect of the students life
Perturbed Parent
The school's policies/views have become tighter this year perhaps it's because we lost a great principal. This is not the only issue the students are dealing they also were told recently that in order to qualify for a scholarship, they are to write an essay supporting Pro Life. They have been told that they cannot write about Pro Choice, only Pro Life. What's happening at St-Joe's folks?

I've read alot of these comments and some are a bit rude why are us girls being attacked here it's as if you saying were disgusting because we like to be comfortable why should it matter what kind of pants I wear do you really think us girls wake up every morning and say " I'm going to wear these pants to maker ass look good so guys can look ad stare" it's seems very unfair to basically tell students u have no choice what if u dont feel comfortable in jeans or other pants thank about how were just teenagers we don't go to meeting or have serious jobs give it a break grow some common knowledge!

they are comfortable

As a senior attending St. Joes I feel like this is just getting out of hand. Why are we focused on how our butts look when we are sitting around in desks all day? Why are we not focusing on the more important issues? Our school has a big problem with bullying and we were 6% below average on a servey which circulated all Ottawa school last year on the topic of belonging. We need to put our attention towards post secondary education, bullying awareness and how we can function in every day society. Its school, not the buisness world. Calm down.

There are students doing drugs, smoking outside, in depression, getting abused, and what does the catholic school board pour it's energy in to? yoga pants.

Perhaps one of the Out Of Class Trips, could be to the ByWard Market to show the young girls that they really are looking like HOOKERS!
Cheap Looking is Cheap!
The short Kilt Skirts are in the same category! Mid knee cap or no school.
Students DO NOT MAKE THE RULES!

Jeans can be just as tight and revealing as these "yoga pants" so why ban one but not the other. Also if this is a distraction to the boys at school there is a problem with the boys not with the girls attire. I agree the ones that can be seen through should not be permitted but that is the only thing that make sense to me. The pants that they are discussing are not even real yoga pants they are leggings which are sold for every day wear. Finally to whoever is promoting uniforms I personally attended a uniformed high school and let me tell you it is definately not cheaper and uniform skirts are often worn in a very "provocative" manner so it really does not help the situation.
Sarah
Once again ...
These types of "pants" are at the least to be worn with a longer shirt.
Its not the pants that are being ban... but the exposed crotch area.
Sophie
Oh sure, ban yoga pants but allow those extremely short skirts! Those are not revealing at all!!!

Yo check it. As a student of st joes, i'd appreciate it if you left the girls alone. let us wear wat we want. as much as the school rides us, its not their business what we wear. ur gonna expell my jag girls? whos gonna support me on the court. let us do us, the school can do school. let the bawts be live... It's a pathetic attempt to ignorantly form what the "adult's" or "school" wants the world to look like. The reality is the world is an ugly place. They hide behind the excuse that it's wrong, or our children shouldn't dress this way or do this and that, but truth is. Go down to any "legitimate adult-owned business" and you will see that it doesn't in the least reflect the pathetic policies or attempts at reform than the school. Instead of being ignorant to the real world, accept it. Focus on the education. A man is going to be attracted to a beauty with or without Lulu's any ways.
Kristine
The school is ridiculous on it's own so many stupid rules! Most teachers at St.Joes suck (literally) they worry more about what your wearing than actually teaching a class! ST JOES find better things to worry about then yoga pants ! Lol
University Student
I'm sorry, but this is outrageous. Yoga pants are too provocative!? First, why are pants even a focus at this school? Who cares what the girls are wearing on their bottoms, be happy they came to school. Second, what is this teaching our youth about their bodies? It is teaching them to be ashamed of female curves. This ban is the reflection of people who are seriously uncomfortable with their own sexuality (that, or they can't keep it in their pants when they see a teenage girl wearing yoga pants). Grow up!(they are, deal with it!) There are more pressing issue than dress code. How about this much effort being put into campaigns about self-esteem and success instead of discriminatory, self- hate propaganda. If you don't like how these girls look in their yoga pants, then there are two things you can do, 1) go to the gym, eat right and seek therapy for self-esteem issues, or 2) don't look. this is sick and borderline sexual harassment. Girls keep rocking out your yoga pants! Don't let them bully you out of your rights. Legally they cannot enforce this rule!
Young Man
I personally do not see it as "School banning yoga pants" It is a matter of modesty not freedom. There is a time and a place for everything. I'm still in high school and to be honest, I find it disgusting that all these girls think it is okay to wear these "yoga pants" EVERYWHERE. Save it for when you're older, thanks.
Jo
hmmm, yoga pants or school uniform skirts shorten that girls can't even sit properly. Let's get back to basics. If you want to go to a Catholic school, wear the uniform with pride and properly. There is no need for a skirt to be worn more than two inches above the knee. If you don't like it, switch schools. School boards need to get serious about how disgraceful this is.
If a school board is not going to have dress codes, then you will get everything, literally. If there is dress code then stick to it. If students rebel, suspend them.
University Student
One more thing, yoga pants are not sexualizing little children! First off, teenagers are not children. Second, we were all born as sexual beings. If your uncomfortable with that then paper bag yourself, but honestly, live and let live. I highly doubt that the students are being distracted by yoga pants. It's more like the staff are the ones who are unable to focus. This policy, again, is not preventing any form of sexual harassment because it is sexual harassment in and of itself!
Joe
Dear britney kingsbury; perhaps when you grow up, you will understand the code. If you didn't like it, why did you stay at the school. If you didn't like the baggy sweat pants then you should have dressed properly to avoid stressing out over the alternate. There are many schools to choose from. I would applaud all schools having dress codes. I wish you all the best in your studies.
Stuart
If schools are going to ban anything because of dress code violations, it shouldn't be yoga pants. They should ban kilts for those are worn so high you wonder what the point of wearing them is.
happytobehere
Schools should be more concerned about the increasing number of student drop outs and the increasing number of students who will only hold low paying jobs due to their lack of diploma. Make high schools a place where teenagers want to be, for many students today school is the best part of their day, the safest place or the only roof over their head.
katie
I think the administration of the school have better things to do than ban lulu pants. Maybe they could try and think of how they can help students who struggle academically and give them extra help; maybe they could supply enough text books so that students could have a reference when doing homework or studying for exams. There are many things the school needs to focus and improve on...drugs at this particular school, "bathroom issues" those who attend know what I mean...please lulu pants give me a break..wake up staff members and focus on the real issues on this school
HY in Ottawa
It should not be the school enforcing appropriate dress for the minors. It should be the parents doing their job: parenting. It's actually scary what kids wear these days. Humans are animals and animals respond to visual incentives, especially men. This is about protecting the kids so I do support some measure of restraint.
Just another mother
Showing too much skin is not the only way clothing can be too revealing. Who really wants or should see every little line, bump, curve and detail of a child's body and under clothing. (I consider any person under 18 to still be a child. Some are more emotionally mature than others but that is not relevant in this situation.) I make sure my children wear appropriate clothing and will continue to do so until they no longer live under my roof and I no longer support them financially.
When selecting a school for my children I not only looked at the educational teachings but also what personal values would be taught also. So far I have been happy with a Catholic school and I would be more than happy to see inappropriate clothing banned. If parents and students are not happy with administrative choices that have been made they can switch to another school and/or school board.
Personally I would be complaining about the quality of education at this school instead. The grammer and punctuation from former students in the comments section is appaling. I wonder if any of them read the little reminder to "Please review for spelling and grammar before hitting 'submit'"

St. Joe's think they've got it bad? Franco-Ouest is not only gonna ban yoga pants but skinny jeans AND leggings as well. i have read a lot of comments about these people talking about how "it's about time those god-darn teenagers got dressed properly!" (most of which are most probably coming from older or middle-aged people), well I'm sorry to inform you that times have changed... It's now acceptable in society for women or young women can wear more form-fitting clothes than ever before, yes.. I know what you're going to say : "they can wear what they want but in a school you have to wear a more professional/appropriate attire", however, these types of pants do not reveal skin and this is not giving ANY freedom to the students. And as you can see they are "popular", meaning that most of the time they can go unnoticed because of how regularly they're being worn. Also i would like to say that these pants are quite expensive and it would be very inconsiderate to tell students that they cannot wear them anymore and that they must go get more "appropriate" pants; that costs more money.
I find this takes away the student's freedom of expression (throughout their clothes) and banning them will only cause rebellion. In fact, the rebellion has already started in St. Joe's... call us "crazy and irresponsible" but we, teens, have a voice too, and it will not be silenced.
Catherine Shortt-Pantusa
Omg! No Yoga Pants should not ever been band from any and all Schools, cause there is nothing wroug with wearing,as a matter of Fact I'am a 37yr old Woman and I wear and so does My 7yr old Step-Daughter.and My Step-Daughter does go to a Catholic School Herself and the Catholic School My Step-Daughter goes to has no Problem with wearing them..so to ALL Women Old and especially Young stand up for Yourselves and show ALL Schools that they can't tell You what type of pants You can or can not wear.so Ladies take a stand and say "these are My Yoga Pants and I will wear them where and when I want"
Brian
I have to agree with this high school's policy on yoga pants. A line has to be drawn somewhere when it comes to provocative clothing, and as a 30-year old man (with a 2-year old daughter) I can tell you that yoga pants are definitely provocative. To everyone who thinks the school is "more concerned with dress regulations than education" you need to take a step back, take a breath, and calm down -- the school has a responsibility to protect its students and promote a positive, professional learning environment. To everyone who thinks it's ok to wear painted-on workout pants to work -- have fun working at Dairy Queen for the rest of your life. This kind of clothing is not acceptable in any sort of working environment here in the "real world." The school administrators are supposed to make the right decisions, and those are sometimes not the most popular decisions. They made the right one.
Karen
I think these young people should be taught to wear pants that fit. Yoga pants are fine but not when they're three sizes too small. I have seen a girl in high school sit down on the bus only to reveal a butt crack of 4 inches! Yes, her yoga pants wre that tight!
Louis
About time! Not everyone looks good in these. Gives the wrong impression. Not always a pleasemt sight to look at, They are for yoga not daily wear. Do you see guys at school in spandex?

Is this the right call in this case maybe but look at what schools are banning some even search kids lunch and ban junk food some schools more or less ban any sports some scholls aslo ban garbage i could go on and on.

Shut 'er down. Fitness can't be tolerated in our schools. Being fit and healthy leads to nothing good -- such as self confidence and acceptiveness. Our children need us to tell them to tone down their opinions to choose their own style. They can only learn and comprehend Shakespeare and Calculus wearing classic goucho pants.
Rachy
Yoga pants are for Yoga... not for class. Go do yoga girls. I am very greateful my parents sent me to a school with a uniform instead of letting me wear the stuff I wanted to wear as a teanager; which would have been a bad decision coming out of my teenage brain. :-)
RESPECT
If you want respect, dress for so
I am 15, I wear those yoga pants but my parents allow it with a long shirt or sweater over it
they explained to me, why and I understand. I want to have respect showed to me but I must act accordingly
Those pants, tight sweaters etc... are sooo tight - it's like a second skin
come on girls - less you show more inviting it is to the boys

if yoga pants existed when I was in high school, I would have failed most subjects. What do you think teen boys look at?

Dear joe: consitering you chose to reply in response to my post, I shall reply to you and the rest of the "agreeing with the ban comments" , perhaps you guys should pop by st joes people you tell us what's right and what's wrong, take a look at the teachers and how they dress, maybe look at all the students in the office cuz of clothes and The ones being told "come back later" by the office when they r being bullied. Maybe go to the mall and notice the yofa pants, WHO CARES SCHOOL IS NOT WORK YES YOU GET US READY FOR THAT BUT UNTIL THEN LET US BE COMFY AND WEAR WHAT WE WANT. Like the other catholic schools in barheaven! And as far as "being a parent goes" they let us wear wat we want because u know what how much people are dying from bullying these days? Yeah exactly they want us to be comfortable with ourself.k perfect.

Wow, can't believe all the negative comments about teachers and the educational system. People think teachers and administrators have easy jobs and nothing better to do except pick on kids clothing, and banning things. Teachers and administrators work very hard and having to deal with all the challenges at a school is very exhausting and time consuming - even takes away from their own family time. Stop picking on teachers and administrators. They don't have an easy job and are their to make the best decisions for the school and each child. Yes, they may have summers off, but if you factor in all the extra time they put in for the benefit of their students, they actually put in more hours than most. Stop complaining kids and be grateful their are teachers who actually care about how you are presenting yourselves in public - in five years you'll be looking at pictures of yourselves in those inappropriate clothes and wish you would have listened to your TEACHER!! The comments posted here by some just goes to show the lack of respect young people show and the selfishness of that generation.

I understand the dress code aspect, but still think it sounds like a funny excuse, at least they are wearing pants and not skirts or shorts so short I think I am watching a rap video. I think schools should have uniforms. If you read the agendas there is a dress code but is rarely enforced. I went to a school where I wore a uniform and found it much better than the school I was at with no uniform. Not sure what it was but it sort of put everyone on the same playing field.
Margaret
I don't have a problem with the yoga pants. Some schools should enforce the length of school uniform kilts. At least with yoga pants you can't see skin.
Joe
I think we should just ban clothes altogether, since they seem to be the source of the problem here. Then everyone can go to school or work as God made them and they'll be no more complaints.
LISTEN GIRLS
GIRLS GIRLS what looks better on you
a second skin that shows all the bumps, bones, crooked legs, etc. etc
or a nice pair of jeans, pants, sweats or whatever that fits well without showing WHAT SHOULD BE HIDDEN
NOT ONE GIRL SHOULD WEAR THESE - I AM 16 AND DON'T HAVE THE BODY TO WEAR THIS AND WHAT GIRL IN HER RIGHT MIND THINKS SO ?????
If the fashion tells you to go to school naked, will you do so
AS FOR BOYS sure they approve - NOT ONE OF THEM IS WEARING YOGA PANTS TO SCHOOL - ARE THEY ??????
think about this ! ! ! please

I'M HONEST, I DON'T

Yes, in regards to ST Joseph H.S. Banning Yoga pants. My two daughters attend this school, and that mother who comment on, the school should not be concerned on what her daughter wears, should be ashamed. I totally agree with this ban, if the girls want to wear them to school, cover up. Honestly, it becomes less of a distraction for the boys, and less peer pressure. If these girls spent less time worrying about fashion and more on their studies. The fashions today for Teens and Tweens, has become more provocative, my God, the school is trying there best, in teaching self- respect, remember this is a CATHOLIC High School. If you don't agree, then put your daughter in a PUBLIC High School.

I find it most interesting to hear the point of view of the students. I tend to agree that yes to a point you should be allowed to wear what you want, jeans, tank, shorts, etc. However, this is a learning institution and a precursor to work or higher education. I am only in my early 30's but I am finding an alarming trend at work among the early 20's group. These younger people are coming in for summer jobs or internships and look like they just rolled out of bed. Most of us wear suits, or at the least dress pants and a nice shirt. There isn't a dress code and I get really tired of the attitude "I should be able to wear what I want". I understand that no one wants to be conformist, but have you actually thought that how you dress is a big part of how you represent yourself? How people see you in an everyday setting can affect future relationships and employment opportunities. If you come to work dressed appropriately that shows you have respect for yourself and your job. If you come in sweats or work out attire it says that you do not take yourself or the job seriously and you will not be around that long. This mentality begins in high school, that what you were sends a loud message to those around you, what do you want that message to say?
Silverwolf
It is about time that parents start parenting properly and using common sense. Yoga pants should be worn at the gym or yoga class not school.
You want schools to focus on lessons instead of clothing - then maybe the clothing should be respectable so it is not distracting to others. This has got nothing to do with "rights" "religion" or anything else but common sense.
Start raising the kids with respect for others and not just ME ME ME and maybe this world with turn out just a little bit better.
If parents focused on their kids behavior than maybe schools would be able to focus on education and not raising the children
Barb E.
I have two teenagers at St Joe's and personally disagree with this ban. These articles of clothing were not a concern until a new principal arrived. I received no message from the school that this was to be implemented nor was I asked to give an opinion. If you check the website for the school board under Administrative Procedures you will find the first statement to be "and in keeping with the wishes of a majority of parents".
Perhaps the principal should read the comments sent in by st Joe's kids and spend more time teaching them grammar and basic spelling than worrying about who is looking at their bums.
...
This is ridiculous. There are far more important things to worry about than wearing lululemon pants such as curriculum and bullying to name a couple. Anyone saying lululemon pants are unflattering is hilarious. Really? Don't be jealous just because they might not suit you. As long as kids are getting their education, I see no reason why they can't do so comfortably. Those saying their for athletic use... you never wore jogging pants to school in your day pre existence of lululemon or any yoga pant for that matter? Oh, and no one ever buys their jeans too tight or two sizes too small, right?? Give yourselves a shake.
Sylvia
At what point will parents raise their kids to simply follow the rules and respect what is in place in terms of policies and procedures. You are raising your kids with a sense of entitlement and a disrespect for rules and even laws in some cases. Sometimes it simply is what it is.. rules are rules...get over it and move on. don't like it? leave in protest OR PARENTS TEACH YOUR CHILDREN to use the system in place to protest or appeal decisions. Enough with this whahahahahah crying to the media to get attention and see changes made without having done anything concrete or constructive to bring the change on. There is no ownership in that...and trust me when I say that there is no reason to be proud of it either. I challenge the students of this school to research the rules, obtain information and guidance, create an appeal or request for changes to the rules, submit it to the board and be ready and prepared to present it to them. Get ready by knowing how to debate and challenge...get ready to accept the decision too. What wonderful life skills to gain in this case. Be constructive and influence in a way that is positive for the establishment AND for you, the student!
Why are they doing this
This is an outrage. This principle should not do this. Why is she even looking at young girls
LC
I think tight pants for girls are fine but definitely NOT for boys! LOL
Hi There
There just pants right so why is it such a big deal? It is not like they are going in there birthday suit.
Suzanne
They should ban YOGA pants in schools and bring back the uniforms. In our days, we had to wear uniforms for school and NO pants were allowed except for GYM. Our skirts were 1 inch above your knees not short like they are wearing these days. I am very surprised that the catholic schools who already have a dress code, that they let the girls wear very short skirts.
This is very provocative and the short skirts should be BAN also.
Awesome Person
I think that is just plain rediculous how they band tight pants and skinny jeans! that is basically all I wear and of course baggy pants but come on do they really need that stupid rule? I don't blame them for rebelling that hideous rule because that is in style.
Sherry
These so called yoga pants are NOT new - back in the 50's and 60's we wore them too but called them "leotards" and we wore them under our clothing (under skirts, pants etc) NOT as if they were pants. They are not regular wear -they are for a yoga class! They do show everything the girl has and some should not wear them in public at all! Of course many guys like them - they like anything that shows what a girl is all about. Some are so tight they look painted on. the schools should go back to uniforms and NOT the short as your belt buckle kind (although many girls "hike" their skirts up to their butts themselves). You're right - things have changed - "ladies and gentlemen" are words of the past too!
John
It's a catholic school. What do you expect? I grew up going to a catholic school as well. I recall they always tended to be more conservative in terms of dress code and what not. This is no surprise to me.
Not sure if I agree/disagree with this recent ban though.
Steve
I applaud the decision by St. Joe's to start regulating the revealing attire of their young teenage girls. As a man with four daughters in the school system, I see clearly the tremendous peer pressure they are under to wear these revealing clothes. What needs to be explained to these girls, and I call them girls because that is what they are, is that if a woman defines herself primarily in terms of her sexuality, and dresses accordingly, then she will be treated as such. She will not be respected, but instead will be judged primarily on her physical appearance and dress and will be treated without much respect. Boys will simply look at her as an opportunity to be taken advantage of. If she wears conservative clothes that cover the body, this will force the boys to focus on her face and to listen to what she is saying and to respect her for her for her dignity as a person. They will then focus on her intelligence, her personality and her virtues. This is far more valuable for the teenage girl, the teenage boy who likes her and socieity as a whole. It builds virtue and character. Dressing like a "loose" woman brings contempt from other members of society, male and female alike. We have gone too far down the road towards hedonism, and it is no wonder the kids coming out of the system have low self esteem and no real goals in life. The executive at St. Joe's have made the right decision. It might be unpopular, but it is in the best interests of these immature girls and society as a whole. Keep up the good work and don't back pedal!

The immortal line from the classic Hackers comes to mind: "Spandex: it's a privilege, not a right"
I am all for this. I wear yoga pants but only with tunic tops or at home. Too many women wear them inappropriately so our last hope are the fashion police.
I do hope that jeans around the knees for boys are also banned or it is a double standard. Axe body spray as well, for the same reason as the leggings... it is abused and creates a nauseous result.
joey
What about the boys wearing pants so LOW you can see their plumbers butt !!! Lets not just single out the girls here. School is NOT a fashion show. Another vote here for school uniforms.
You need to read people
All of you jumping on the religious band wagon or any other band wagon, the school is enforcing their dress code which does not mention yoga pants ..it mentions revealing clothing, tight form fitting clothing etc... yes yoga pants fall into that category but it is the matter of form fitting clotthing that is the issue here..my personal opinion? If you don't agree with the dress code then change the dress code...if you do not abide by the dress code, there should be consequences. Plain and simple...remember these are children and need to know there are rules and those rules need to be enforced.
sam
After reading these comments I would like to point out the majority of the people should have listened better in class what with the atrocious grammar! Never mind the yoga pants ban, we should be taking a hard look at the product our schools are churning out these days.
DANYA
Finally some common sence. In fact ALL SCHOOLS SHOULD HAVE UNIFORMS FOR STUDENTS.
Yoga pants are to be worn only for yoga NOT for EVERYDAY wear.
KEEP YOU PRIVATE PARTS TO YOURSELF.
THANK YOU.
UNIFORMS SHOULD BE PART OF ALL SCHOOLS.
Sue Nettleton
I am glad to see that a parent is soooo concerned about the yoga pants that she took the time out of her busy day to make a fuss. But what about all the fundraising that the school does or how about the beautiful Remebrance Day ceremony that the school held.I did not see very many parents attend that. They are presently working on the Christmas Baskets, how about that making the news. Its always about the negative.Just like in the work force, their is a dress code.
David
The parent quoted in the news story makes a good point. There are much more important issues to which resources should be devoted. Get a life. By the way, why does our government fund only one religion-affiliated school system?
former student
I am a graduate from this school and I must say people being sent home for dress code was extremely rare when I was there but then again the girls in the grades younger than us did dress slightly less appropriately, and fashion trends have changed since then. I do agree that yoga pants are certainly a more comfortable alternative to jeans but to go as far to say that wearing denim instead of a jegging will disrupt your ability to learn because you are less comfortable is a load of bull... We have all been able to wear jeans (and still do) before lulu's became popular so don't even start with that! This should not be seen as a BAN because you CAN still wear them! Just cover up the stuff that they don't want to see! It really isn't that hard people. And as one guy even admitted on here...they are distracting! Sure as a woman I will admit that a guy noticing me is awesome but NOT for those reasons and NOT when he is calling himeself a 'perv'. Everyone just needs to relax and follow the simple restrictions.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to ban yoga pants. It appears that these tight pants are cutting off essential blood flow to the brains of the students.Kids today can't even spell and do basic math let alone decide what to wear.As far as administration is concerned,it may be wiser to focus on why kids can't read, write and do basic math.Let's get back to teaching and learning for a change!

@Maggie: You think that having uniforms at all schools would save money, hassels and competition? Do you have any idea how wrong you are?
Money: Everytime the kid went through a growth spurt they would need new uniform pieces, also it's not like they would have ONE of everything, because who does laundry every night? So they'd have to buy multiple school uniforms, unless you think the school board is going to provide multiples of everything to each student.
Hassels: There would *STILL* be dress code issues, with teachers having to ensure that the kids wore the appropriate uniforms. If there are skirts, girls will roll them up to make them shorter. For their tops, buy a size smaller or try to shrink them to make them tighter. Guys will buy larger pants so they're still baggy and maybe showing off their boxers. There will be complaints about colours or lack of choices, etc...
And competition: Again with who can make their uniform tighter, sexier. Who looks better in the options that have been provided? Who can afford to buy more options so they have different outfits each day...
Uniforms aren't magic, they don't take away these problems they just change them slightly. When they tried to bring uniforms to my high school one senior boy said if they forced uniforms on us he was buying a skirt and wearing it every day. If you think uniforms will make that big of a difference, you're dreaming!
Dawn H.
I seem to remember back in the eighties getting friends and using hangers to help pull up the zipper of my pants because they were so tight...This doesn't fall under the responsibility of the schools but parents. I do not buy certain pants for my daughter because they look "too sexy" and/or are too revealing...And if she was buying them herself I would take them away from her so she knows that it is not acceptable and next time think before she buys something...I think I have turned into my parents when I say...maybe just buy some paint and paint on your pants!
Former Joe's Grad
As a former male student at St. Joe's, I feel terrible for all the current male students that will miss out on yoga pants.
Stay strong men, you'll get through this!
St Joes mom
Relax EVERYONE...they are NOT banning the yoga pants, they are simply asking the girls that choose to wear them for comfort, for fashion, for whatever reason, to accompany it with a LONG top of some sort to cover their butt. That's it!
Tara MacDougall
It angers me that this school is concentrating on the kids' pants when what they should be concentrating on is bullying and how to put a stop to it! There are poor children suffering everyday and these school officials are cracking down on yoga pants? Get it together people!!
Michael
The problem is people hate being told what to do. If the administration thinks that this issue is worth fighting they should enforce it and explain to the students why it is important to ban.
More important things to worry about
Maybe the School Board should concentrate on the curriculum instead of how people are dressed. That way people posting their comments would use proper spelling and grammar.
Kids - Grow up
1. People under 18 in this country are NOT adults and therefore ARE children. Read the Charter of Rights and Freedoms - it's the law.
2. Wearing clothing to draw attention to parts of your body is provocative and it IS the schools' business. They need to create an environment conducive to learning. It's not controlling - they are trying to create the appropriate environment for learning and working - it's called the REAL world people - not Friday night at the club.
3. Good job on the school for teaching people how to properly respect their body. I have a daughter and she will wear lulus when she is at home, or exercising and that is it until she is 18 and an adult who can make her own decisions.
4. If you HS students want a professional job when you graduate you might want to listen to your teachers. As a manger at a company, I wouldn't hire you if you came in dressed like that for an interview.
Danielle 17
I think if that mother actually said out loud "I am fighting a school rule to not allow my daughter to wear tight sweat pants to a school that has a dress code." What is she teaching her daughter? Stand up for the right to dress like a bum??? Obviously if they implemented a rule it was because it was a problem. They are not saying they can't wear them, They are saying cover up. I'm just not sure why this mom is ok with her daughter's bum hanging out for all to see?
Matt
I went to a Catholic High school with a strict dress code. As a male student I was continually distracted in class by short skirts and yoga pants. I appreciate the dress code at this school because it has nothing to do with limiting expression. It is there to make the school a better learning environment for all students. After all, boys will be boys...
Cat
I don't see anything wrong with these pants...what I don't like is the boys who wear their pants half way down their butts and you can see their undies!

Of course teachers don't have it easy but the thing is alot of these rules make it harder on them in soem schools they have teachers check everyones lunch and snacks and if its not healthy the kids can't eat it in some cases there are no sports allowed my point is is all of these makes it harder.
Sherry
Would you allow girls just to wear panty hose or tights to school? Of course not, but the only difference between them and yoga "pants" is the colour.
The school is absolutely doing the right thing here.
Didrick
If it's the policy of the school then it should be followed. Period.
I'm not opposed with wearing yoga pants but what's the problem with covering up the butts. I do agree, however, that it seems it's always woman that need to conform to the rules.
I'd like to see a ban on boys wearing their pants to their knees and showing off their boxers..
KathieC in Nepean
I'm the person who wrote the letter to the school and my whole reason for writing the letter was this....I'm sick and tired of the pettiness! Seems like every time we turn around we hear that something else is being banned. Don't schools have much more important things to deal with? Why don't they focus more on issues like bullying, teenage suicides and how to prevent them, keeping students from dropping out of school, acceptance of gay students....these are all really pressing issues so please don't send home a letter complaining about what pants my daughter wore to school! For those of you who are against this type of dress, just wanted to tell you that they also don't want them wearing sweatpants because they aren't professional-looking. This is high school!!! Stop the nitpicking and just teach my kid! If the school wants to fix this problem once and for all then by all means, bring in school uniforms....I'm 100% in favour of that! For those of you who will jump all over this, please go ahead - I'm entitled to express my opinion just as much as you are. As far as I'm concerned, it's hard enough to keep students interested in school so rather than nitpicking at everything constantly maybe the administration should 'pick their battles'. Please work to keep our children interested in staying in school - the more we push them, the more they'll push back and we may not like how hard they push!
agree
I supply for the catholic school board, and while I had nothing to do with this decision, I completely support it. They are YOGA pants... these girls are not wearing them to do yoga or exercise, they are wearing them because they are tight and revealing and attract the attention of boys. Or if they want to claim they are wearing them simply because they are comfortable, then they should have no problem wearing longer shirts with it. Provocative clothing has always been against the dress code, so I think they should enforce the ban on all provocative clothing not just yoga pants. Working in high schools, I constantly see girls (even in 7th and 8th grade) wearing tight or even see-through shirts with push-up bras and showing cleavage you'd expect to see in a nightclub! It's completely inappropriate, this is school! Wear what you want after-school and on weekends, but when you're in school, dress appropriately. Yes fashion is one way of expressing yourself, but you can express yourself in a million different ways without dressing in tight, revealing clothes. I hope more schools start enforcing their already existing dress codes.
JC
To 'Just Another Mother': I agree! Along with everyone 'covering their butts', it might help if the schools taught the students some grammar (and maybe math might turn out to be useful in life, too).
'There': not here, but there.
'Their': not mine or yours, but their (possessive, in other words). Basically, adults acting as adults and teaching by word and example, and children acting as children and obeying - 'just because I said' - might be refreshing and sort out who is who in the world.

Since publically funded Catholic schools are continuing to oppress female students rights, perhaps now is the time for the Ontario Government to outlaw Catholic and religious dominated schools once and for all, and take funding away from them.
That way, the Ontario Government sends a message that fascism and sexism have no place in Canadian Society.
Besides, if female students want to wear leggings, jeggings, or lululemon pants, its their business, not sexist Catholic school trustees.
In the meantime, I encourage parents with female students going to Catholic schools to take legal action as it violates their human rights.
Brent
I agree with the policy. It is not a BAN as so many people are saying. It is a dress code that requires an individual who chooses to wear yoga pants to cover parts of their body. Kids and teenage fashions have been getting more and more revealling in recent years. Dress codes and appropriate attire are parts of everyday life. Kids need to learn some modesty, and it's the parents and schools jobs to teach them. Revealling clothes not only foster challenges for the schools, it can also lead to taunting, teasing and bullying. N0 one needs to see their underwear, bras or explicity details of their body shape through revealling, tight fitting, see through, strapless clothes or pants that are so saggy they are down to the knees!
40something
That is ridiculous! I don't see anything wrong with them. Of course, there are 2 different types of yoga pants. The wide leg pants are basically a replacement for wearing sweat pants, which were worn when I went to school ~ and they are comfy. Who wears sweat pants anymore? It is 2011...styles have changed! Get with the times. Students need to be comfy & not have to worry about having to "look" professional at school, they are there to learn and they are not out in the working world yet. Plus, I think it's better than the guys wearing tights!
Brian
Well, after reading the comments in here I can safely say that far too many commentors arguing for the pants should have spent more time with their noses in a book instead of in a mirror making sure they looked "hot" for school.
A supposed college student that doesn't know the difference between "their", "there", and "they're" complaining about certain pants being banned in one particular school is almost delightful in its irony.
T
The catholic high school I went to had uniforms, and trust me, the girls there dressed so much more slutty than the public high school wearing yoga pants and spandex... Also, by banning something, you're just making people want to break the rules.Personally, I dont find yoga pants to be a big deal. They're probably the most comfortable thing ever to wear, and they're fashionable. If the school is having such a hard time with their dress code, they should probably consider uniforms and see where that ends up..
dupce
I’m 71 and I’ve seen a lot of things.
I’m not a prude but when I see a 16 year old with everything hanging out, there is a limit.
It is up to the Mother to control their daughters and if they show up like sluts then they should be held responsible.
Brian
Judging by a good number of the comments on this story it might be wise to concentrate on teaching these kids how to spell....then get rid of anything that distracts students from their studies. If necessary, separate the girls from the boys.
T
While I think it's ridiculous to wear yoga pants anywhere except to a gym, I think everyone is overreacting.
1 - The school should restrict yoga pants to gym class and not ban them entirely. It's so much easier to work out when you don't have extra fabric restricting your movement. In the right setting, yoga pants are actually quite practical.
2- Students - quit your whining. You're not going to win because...
3- School boards and PTA's rule your world (unfortunately). I attended St. Matt's and our principal at the time held an undemocratic election that resulted in our school getting uniforms (only 20% of families ended up having the opportunity to vote on the issue).
Our uniforms were cheaply made, poor quality and not attractive in the least. If you were overweight, they were terribly unflattering. If you were super-skinny, you looked like you were swimming in your clothes. You weren't allowed to alter them to fit you properly. They didn't keep you warm in winter and they sure didn't keep you cool in spring/summer(without a/c going, it's pretty brutal). And because the company that makes these uniforms is the supplier for most catholic high schools in Ottawa, you very well could be next.
So kids, if you think not being able to wear yoga pants is a crisis - quit crying and thank your lucky stars that you don't have to wear a uniform.
Tony
Schools have dress standards, and if you contravene those standards you get sent home to change. Welcome to the way the world works, kids.
More disturbing to me than that is the lack of spelling, grammar and writing skill shown by many of the high-school students replying to this thread. That gives me concerns for the future generations more than some outrage over yoga pants.
Really?
Is anyone else noticing the poor quality of the posts by the St.Joe's grads? Maybe the school should be putting emphasis on getting kids to concentrate in English class and debate rather than keeping track of dress code regulations. It's common sense that what is appropriate for school is not what is appropriate in the workplace. We see our parents go to work everyday. We have them as role models and as guides for that kind of thing. Students don't need to show up in turtlenecks and floor length prairie skirts to learn. They do, however, need quality teachers who care about making a difference in the learning of students, and banning yoga pants just doesn't cut it. I graduated from Mother Teresa 4 years ago and girls had been wearing yoga pants to school long before that. It didn't do us any harm.
Joanne
This is ridiculous. If it's a matter of inappropriateness, why is this edict only being applied to girls and yoga pants? Boys wear skinny jeans and I don't have to spell out what they highlight. Are they asked to wear below the waist jerseys? I suspect not. What are school officials doing this weekend- burning Elvis records?
Come on people
If kids and even some adults don't have rules and limits and what they can and cannot wear, they would go out practically naked. Even in the workplace, some women dress with clothes that are much too revealing. Then they ask themselves why things happen. Teaching kids how to dress appropriately should be done at home and if some parents can't do it, school MUST have a say.
Sarah
I see girls in jeans and skirts that tight all the time. Next every one will have to wear baggy pants and raggy shirts, then every one will have to have their hair up and boys will have to shave their heads.I see nothing wrong with them, my sister is 16 and she has a pair, and maybe wears them two or three a month to school. I used to wear them to school too, and even moore dureing exam time, They look a heck of alot better than pjs. And why are they not banning boxers showing? I mean you see every boys undies every day. This is just silly.
rkozga1
It’s about time! Well done (sincerely) Ottawa Catholic School Board.
Teenage Horror
Honestly I think it's kind of a good thing... People keep saying the school's not concerned about education, but really I don't see how banning provocative clothes no self respecting girl would wear in public affects education?
Yoga pants and stuff like that are just asking for guys (and girls?) to give you negative attention. I wear skinny jeans, but wearing leggings or jeggings or whatever is pretty much like wearing tights, just tights. Unfortunately, the media has made being sexy the norm, so now we have young girls trying their hardest to be sexy. Maybe this is the first step to get girls dressing like girls should be dressing, not like porn stars. (:
F***ing stupid
as a recent high school graduate, this is stupid. half the things they teach in schools is useless. the teachers do not know how to teach different ways of learning. I believe teachers should be Fired for not learning proper techniques. if lulu lemons are against god them im going to hell. im hopping every girl that school starts wearing them as dress codes are stupid. i couldn't wear a studded belt, my buddy couldn't wear eye liner because he was a guy. catholic schools need to start accepting individuality and new trends.
Daniel
Although I fully support the school in this situation, this "news" is not worthy to make it national. If this school was not Catholic, it would never have been mentioned.
Jim
Can they ban UGG boots too? That style was over with years ago!
Just Saying - Ottawa
Think they look better then someone wearing pyjamas around...see many young people and older for that matter and they look like heck. Also what about the guys who wear their jeans down to the tops of their legs and their boxer shorts up under their armpits...hows that for fashion. It's kids being kids...and some of the best kids are the ones with the odd hair and different clothes...lighten up.
Bec
I am a college student and also work in a high school, and I think this ban is just ridiculous. I understand enforcing rules or creating guidelines to follow, but banning the pants all together isn't what they should be doing. I don't wear "lulu lemons" only because I cannot justify paying 100 dollars for a pair of pants, but I do wear pants very similar along with millions of other girls. The pants can be bought in a size that does not make it insanely revealing or does not suffocate a girl. Set guidelines that they can’t be SKIN TIGHT but don't ban them all together. You're looking at the wrong thing here ..Stating that it's "distracting”. Then maybe you should be teaching people respect rather than taking away an article of clothing. If you are actually enforcing this, and then look at a bigger picture - guys wear tight pants, I know many. Guys in skinny jeans are just as revealing as a girl wearing lulus. Or people wearing pants that hang off their ass ..Like that’s not distracting. Enforce a proper dress code without having to make people go out and buy a whole new wardrobe. Some people aren't comfortable wearing jeans, and you're not going to get a whole high school to show up wearing work pants because it's "appropriate for the workforce". Face the fact, THEY'RE IN HIGH SCHOOL! They haven’t entered that world yet. They are going to have many years ahead of them to dress "professionally". This is just plain ridiculous. Maybe you should have tried a far different and better approach before making this decision. You created a disaster where students are just going to rebel against this ban - I would. It has become a trend.
Bec
*CONTINUED* You think "yoga" pants should just be worn for yoga, then “work pants” should just be worn for work. “Sweat pants” should just be used for lounging and exercise. Many teenagers find their freedom of expression in the way they dress – let them be free to express themselves. You can let them continue that; just direct it in appropriate ways without taking it away all together. You’re wasting your time on something that shouldn’t be the issue or the big picture at all. “Yoga” pants aren’t the cause of bad marks, drug use, skipping class, misbehaving, or a bad education system – it has nothing to do with this. And if you’re trying to stop them from “getting attention” they’ll find it in another way – then you guys will figure out how to ban that too ..but don’t forget to wait until it has already been happening for a long time and everyone is used to it. If you see an issue with something, maybe you should have addressed it a long time ago when this TREND actually started, and this wouldn't be a problem. Crack down on something that matters. Congratulations on your higher suspension rate because of a pair of pants.
MIKI
the girls are trying to excite the males, and the some males can't concentrate on the books, maybe the scenario, or are the girls trying to compete with the other girls so they don't get in the "out crowd". Either way there is plenty of time in life for living and children should be encouraged to study and not be superficial. Dress up out of school and have a studious student game face and clothing to match. Peaheads are consumed with this "arn't I cute" thing..lol, they are brining a divisive factor into the school and should be told to cover up their exhibitionist tendencies. They actually lack confidence and those that support them ought to grow up.
Colleen Hanlon
A former St.Joes student, I'd like to say that yes understandable you'd hope that all people universally are tasteful... yet they cannot take away one type of pant and think that'll fix the problem. tight jeans, tight shirts, tight this tight that and how about the guys,sweatpants?...in a world where freedom of choice is supposed to be implemented why are they really going to achieve? And I agree maybe putting more effort into figuring these people out would benefit the school overall.. maybe fix the drug problems, the essential issues... dress code has to be taken into account of course but you have to draw the line somewhere.. no skin showing is one thing, defining what is and isn't too tight cannot be done, some people are different sizes and how will you define what is too tight from one person to the next.. too many issues come along with such a ambiguous decision
Lex
Im not a religious supporter in ANY means but I think people are forgetting the fact that yes is it against the dresscode long laid out even from when I went to highschool.
This isnt an infringement on stdents rights... If I was wearing clothing that CLEARLY showed my a** and junk I would not be shocked if faculty asked me to cover up as well.
People thinking this is some infringement on rights or catholic nuts being nuts, your overreacting its simple dress code.

UNIFROMS FOR ALL SCHOOLS
William
Okay soo... All we have here is people complaining both ways I'm not for either or side i don't care I've been out of school a while and in college as well. Now some girls find clothing their comfortable in empowering making them feel good, now if you have boys drooling all over them its never gonna stop regardless of the clothing to be honest. Now if you haven't realized in schools with uniforms you still have guys distracted none the less due to skirts and all and the fact theirs stairs. It seems to be the way most guys are, and if i may point out those kind of pants are in many many workplaces if you haven't noticed. It is just an article of clothing regardless of how it makes people feel and regardless of how it may make people rage in this case certain individuals in school due to wanting respect for maybe their female peers or parents trying to have their daughters respect themselves. Clothing doesn't make the person, maybe some people but its the personal choices that make people who they are. If they make bad or good its up to them in the end no matter what you say or do to force rules.
fitnessgal
I don't have an issue with the pants being worn to school, as long as the front and back is not riding up the ying yang. What’s next, will the school say girls cannot wear tight jeans, they have to be loose fitting, seriously!I attended my teenager’s graduation ceremony this past summer and the Principal of the school was wearing a short skirt. Therefore, if you put a system in place make sure you lead by example. The school is known for “More money more drugs”. Focus on changing that!
