An American outlet mall company is planning to open a 350,000 square feet shopping centre in Kanata as part of its Canadian expansion.

North Carolina-based Tanger Factory Outlet Centers announced Monday it has bought around 50 acres of land off Highway 417 at Palladium Drive, along with Canadian real estate company RioCan.

The news release said it will be similar to Tanger's 38 upscale outlet malls in 25 states.

"When fully complete, the project will be home to approximately 350,000 square feet of branded factory outlet retailers from the U.S. and Canada offering consumers a unique opportunity to purchase merchandise directly from leading designer and brand name manufacturers at a substantial savings," it said.

There were no specifics on what stores could be coming, but many other Tanger locations have stores and brands like Fossil, Coach, Movado, Kenneth Cole, Yankee Candle, JCrew, and Polo Ralph Lauren.

Tanger said they hope part of the outlet mall will be open by late 2013 or early 2014.

The companies also announced plans to buy the Cookstown Outlet Mall, about 50 kilometres north of Toronto, and re-brand it as Canada's first Tanger Outlet Centre.

Tanger said they hope to open ten to 15 stores across the country in the next five to seven years.
