A prominent Ottawa business is launching a defence of the beaver as Canada's national symbol.

The flagship BeaverTail shop in the ByWard Market held a rally Tuesday, rebelling against a Senator's move to replace it with the polar bear.

"We're here to stand up on our haunches and support our national symbol," said BeaverTail founder Grant Hooker.

Senator Nicole Eaton said she wants the beaver out, calling it a "dentally challenged rodent."

"The polar bear represents to me something that the furry rodent does not," she said.

The beaver is Canada's symbol largely because it was a big reason for fur traders coming over to Canada, founding the Hudson's Bay Company.

Hooker put up model and stuffed beavers around his booth and gave away free BeaverTails and hot chocolate during the rally.
