A provincial group in Guelph is looking to bring the debate about abortion back in the House of Commons.

Alliance for Life Ontario is running a fourteen week campaign called ‘We Want the Debate' in an effort to get Canadians talking about the controversial procedure.

However, in April 2011, Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the federal government's position clear.

"As long as I am Prime Minister, we are not re-opening the abortion debate," said Harper.

Planned Parenthood of Waterloo Region has weighed in, stating the debate should remain with individual women.

"It is clearly a volatile issue," wrote Executive Director Angela Murie in a statement to CTV News. "But it remains our stance that women should be trusted to make their own decisions about their reproductive health and futures."

A poll conducted after the Prime Minister's statement in April suggests fifty-two percent of Canadians are willing to debate the issue.
