OC Transpo officials say the current public transit fare system is too complicated and they want to alter it to make it simpler.

Alain Mercier, president of OC Transpo, says he is planning to present a new fare structure to Ottawa's transit committee in December. The committee will vote on the new plan at the beginning of next year.

"There's lots of conditions. There's age conditions we've talked about in the past, there's transferability issues," said Mercier. "So a lot of these things we've been bringing forth in front of the commission."

"And we're going to have to bring all that together in our fare table."

There are currently four categories of bus fare: child, regular, express, rural express.

Besides the system being "too complicated," OC Transpo officials also want to change the system because transit smart cards will be rolling out next spring.

The changes will likely mean that some riders will pay less while others might end up paying more.
