A newly released study suggests that a majority of people in Ontario want to be able to buy beer and wine at the convenience store.

The poll, which was conducted by Angus Reid for the Ontario Convenience Stores Association, said that 60 per cent of respondents support changing provincial rules to allow booze to be sold by more retailers.

Interest was highest in eastern Ontario where 71 per cent of respondents support the idea.

However, Premier Dalton McGuinty said Wednesday that his government doesn't plan to make any changes to the way booze is sold in Ontario.

Other provinces, including Quebec, already sell alcohol at convenience stores.

The poll surveyed 803 people living in Ontario who were 19 or older. The survey was conducted over a five-day period in February. The margin of error is +/- 3.5 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
