An anonymous donor has given the Ottawa Humane Society $1.5 million to put towards its new facility on West Hunt Club Road.

There's no information about who the donor is, but the money helped the humane society complete its fundraising campaign for the new building.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, his wife Laureen, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird and Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson were all on hand for the ribbon cutting at the new facility in south Ottawa Wednesday morning.

"It was barely a year ago that (my daughter) Rachel and I and John Baird pitched in at the groundbreaking ceremony. Now we have a facility that is truly state of the art, a place where animals that can come from difficult circumstances can recover from their health, get back on their feet, or their paws, so to speak, before being adopted in their forever families," said Laureen Harper, honourary chair of the Ottawa Humane Society.

The new facility is about three times the size of the old one and is able to accommodate about 600 animals. The entire project cost about $16 million.
