Some postal workers in Ottawa were upset Tuesday morning when they reported to work and the doors were locked.

Tuesday was the first day that Canada Post didn't deliver mail to urban areas as part of the Crown corporation's cutbacks to service.

Last week, Canada Post said mail volume had dropped by 50 per cent and it couldn't afford to continue delivering mail five days a week.

As a result, shifts for mail carriers in urban areas have been scaled back and mail will only be delivered three days a week.

Ottawa has yet to be hit by a rotating strike that's hitting cities across the country. Workers in Montreal and Toronto walked off the job Tuesday as part of the rotating strikes.

Canada Post says since the strike action began almost two weeks ago it has cost the company $65 million.

Key sticking points in the negotiations involve pensions, sick leave and staffing levels.
