The Ottawa area laced up its walking shoes Sunday for a number of fundraising treks around the city.

Fresh off a $6.3 million dollar telethon, the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario saw more generosity at the Walmart Walk for Miracles at Confederation Park off Elgin Street.

Participant Juliet Alfaro said she got carried away with running the five-kilometre route.

"When we started we thought we'd just run at the end but …I just zoomed off," she said.

That walk raised $160,000 – comparable to the $220,000 raised at Juliana Park near Little Italy for juvenile diabetes.

That money goes to the fight against the disease that's disrupting Kevin Williams' daily routine.

"I have to take 5 injections per day of my insulin," he said. "My pancreas can't make any insulin."

Hundreds took time out of their day to raise about $140,000 for international development projects at the World Partnership Walk at Major's Hill Park.

The Aga Khan Foundation Canada was the beneficiary of that money, fighting poverty around the world.

"100 per cent of the funds go to the development projects themselves," said Salim Fakirani. "There is no administration cost."

These totals are added to the thousands raised to rescue local dogs with the Woofs and Wags Walkathon and the $334,000 from Saturday's Underwear Affair.
