A five-and-a-half month strike at a Shawville, Que. grocery store has ended with the store's closure Saturday.

A statement from John Valu-Mart said the union, which has been on strike since Dec. 3, rejected the store's final offer.

"The employer's best and final offer to reach an agreement with the CSN union that included a substantial renovation investment to resume operations was voted on and rejected by the employees," said the statement.

The union had previously complained the working conditions at the store were much lower than across the province.

The store said that because of the vote, the viability of the store couldn't be preserved.

"There is no alternative but to close it permanently," said the statement. "We thank our customers for their support and appreciate being a part of the community."

A spokesperson for the union said Saturday afternoon they had not been notified of the closure and would comment later.
