MONTREAL - A 10-year-old boy whose father has been charged with killing him was remembered on Thursday as a happy child and a sports fanatic.

Deyan Perisic and his 12-year-old sister, Danyela, were shot in Texas on Dec. 13.

The girl survived but remains in hospital.

Predrag Perisic, a former Quebecer, has been charged with murder and attempted murder and is currently detained in Texas.

Hundreds of people attended Deyan's funeral in Montreal on Thursday, including students and staff from his old school and coaches and teammates from his former soccer team.

Family member Tommy Mouhteros remembered Deyan as a vibrant boy who loved sports.

"He was a kid who dreamed about playing for the Impact, for the Montreal Canadiens," Mouhteros said.

"A great little athlete. He would have grown up to be a tremendous athlete.

"He was a very, very happy child and very close to his sister. He was just a joy."

A child custody complaint from November indicates the father failed to return the children to their mother as required by Quebec Superior Court.

Authorities went to Perisic's home in Coldspring, Texas, on Dec. 13 to arrest him on the child custody charge.

According to a statement from the sheriff's office, police say they were climbing to the second floor of the house when they heard gunshots.

They found Perisic and his two children.
