The son of former Newfoundland premier Brian Tobin, John "Jack" Tobin, has been arrested after a man was found dead under a pick-up truck in a Byward Market parking garage early Christmas Eve.
CTV Ottawa called the Tobin family home in Manotick to confirm the news. A woman who answered the phone said, "No comment." The Tobin family was expected to release a statement Friday evening.
Police were called to the Vinci Market Garage between George and York Streets near Sussex Drive about at 3 a.m. where they found a 24-year-old Ottawa man trapped under the body of a grey Dodge Ram pickup truck on the fifth floor of the parkade.
Emergency crews freed the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said they arrested a 24-year-old Toronto man who was believed to be the driver of the truck. Tobin is 24 and works as a manager for Source Security and Investigations in Toronto.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident.
"This is truly tragic," said Insp. Mike Callaghan. "We would like everyone to ensure that if they are consuming alcohol, that they don't get behind the wheel of a vehicle."
Police said the victim, the driver, and several witnesses of the crash, all knew each other.
Tobin is expected to appear in court Christmas morning.
Brian Tobin was the premier of Newfoundland from 1996 to 2000. He was also a well-known Liberal MP during the Mulroney government.
