A multi-million dollar contract for Ottawa's Dragonwave will help serve Canada's rural areas with hi-speed Internet.

Barrett Xplore, which specializes in providing Internet service to rural areas, says it will build a $150-million hi-speed Internet network over the next two years.

Dragonwave equipment will power the system and deliver Internet that is anywhere from three to 10 times faster than current systems in rural areas. The network will combine satellites and some 1,200 towers.

Dragonwave and Barrett Xplore have worked together before.

Barrett Xplore's vice president of strategic technology, Jeff Burlock, said it's the company's mission to help service rural areas.

"Our mission is to bridge the urban/rural broadband divide. 4G will mean that fast, robust, affordable broadband services will be available to all Canadians, regardless of location. The benefits of rural broadband cannot be overstated," he said.
