A 55-year-old woman is recovering in hospital after a fire broke out at the New Orchard Lodge around 8:30 Tuesday morning.

When emergency crews arrived, nursing home staff had already managed to put out the flames themselves.

Paramedics say the 55-year-old woman was treated for smoke inhalation. She is now in stable condition at an Ottawa hospital.

There is no word on whether or not the victim was a staff member or resident.

New Orchard Lodge is located west of downtown Ottawa off Richmond Road. It offers 24-hour nursing care to its residents.
