The Ottawa Citizen is cutting staff after 42 employees opted to take voluntary buyouts as part of an effort to cut jobs and tighten their operations.

Ten editorial positions were cut, along with positions in advertising, sales and finance. Among the journalists leaving the newspaper are business reporter Bert Hill, Dave Rogers and Kate Jaimet.

The buyouts come after Postmedia purchased the Ottawa Citizen from Canwest this summer, along with 10 other daily newspapers, 26 community newspapers and several Internet properties.

Postmedia CEO Paul Godfrey confirmed last month that some of the company's daily newspapers would be laying off staff and offering voluntary buyout packages to employees. He also confirmed the company would be re-focusing its priorities to increase online readership.

"Everyone is busy preparing budgets and they're reviewing their needs and their staffing components based upon the digital-first philosophy and any restructuring they have to do with respect to it," Godfrey said in an interview in early September.

The newspapers were purchased after Canwest filed for creditor protection last fall.
