A 71-year-old cyclist who was struck by a vehicle in south Ottawa last month has died of his injuries.

Wendal Carkner was critically injured when he was struck by a vehicle on Hawthorne Road in the early afternoon of Sept. 25.

Carkner had no vital signs when paramedics arrived at the scene. However, paramedics managed to bring his pulse back on route to hospital. Carkner died on Saturday.

Although the senior was wearing a helmet, it shattered when his head struck the vehicle's windshield. Paramedics who responded to the scene said Carkner was thrown a "significant distance" on impact.

Police are now waiting for autopsy results to determine the senior's exact cause of death.
