An Ottawa judge has decided there's enough evidence for a suspended Mountie to stand trial for the first-degree murder of Const. Eric Czapnik.

Kevin Gregson's preliminary hearing was scheduled to last for seven days. However, the Crown limited its witnesses and the hearing proceeded quickly.

The judge formally committed the case to superior court late Thursday afternoon. Gregson will be back in court Nov. 12 to set a trial date.

The preliminary hearing was an emotional experience for members of Czapnik's family, who wept and stared down the man accused of killing the beloved police officer.

Gregson is accused of fatally stabbing Czapnik outside the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital on Dec. 29, 2009.

Evidence presented at the preliminary hearing is protected by a standard publication ban.
