An Ottawa man charged with running down a group of five cyclists in Kanata last summer will stand trial, a judge ruled.
Sommit Luangpakham, 46, faces five counts of failing to remain at the scene, as well as five counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle.
Five cyclists were seriously injured when they were hit by a minivan on March Road in Kanata in July 2009. Luangpakham turned himself in to police a few hours after the collision.
Robert Wein, the most seriously injured cyclist, suffered a serious brain injury in the crash and was listed in critical condition in hospital for weeks. He is still receiving therapy for his injuries.
Luangpakham's preliminary hearing wrapped up Tuesday, when a judge ruled there is enough evidence to proceed with a full trial.
Details of the pre-trial are protected by a routine publication ban.
Luangpakham is a machine operator who has no previous criminal record. His case returns to court Nov. 12.
