A 35-year-old man is charged with second-degree murder in connection with a stabbing and death on Riverside Drive. The name of the female victim was not released, but it is suspected that it was a domestic dispute.

Tamarat Gebere will appear in court on Monday, the same day a post-mortem has been scheduled.

Neighbours at the building now are trying to piece together what happened. Shannon Leduc has lived there for many years; she said this incident caught her competely by surprise.

"I'm afraid to get in the elevator now," Leduc said. "You don't know who is living here."

Toddler carried out by police

At about 4:15 p.m. Saturday, police were called to the complex at 1541 Riverside Dr.

A man was taken into custody, and police carried a small child away from the scene -- believed to be the couple's toddler.

The incident happened on the seventh floor. Other tenants describe it as a nice place with nice people, and that the couple involved in the domestic dispute just moved in.

So far, police have remained silent about the identity of the woman killed.

Second stabbing occurs in less than 24 hours

It is Ottawa's seventh homicide this year.

In the last 24 hours, another reported stabbing happened in Ottawa -- also pegged as a domestic dispute. Injuries were suffered by both a man and a woman at a complex on Ottawa's Othello Avenue.

Both remain in police custody and could face charges. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
