The transit system in the City of Ottawa is the most expensive in Ontario, according to a report prepared by a consultant hired by the mayor.
The report found that Ottawa's spending on transit is $252 per capita, compared to $160 in Toronto and $77 in London, Ont.
The report was prepared by Bob Plamondon, a consultant hired by Mayor Larry O'Brien to examine the city's finances.
The city is in the midst of moving forward with a plan to revamp transit in the capital with a multi-billion dollar project that includes building a downtown tunnel in Ottawa and installing 12.5 kilometres of light rail tracks from Blair Road to Tunney's Pasture. The initial phase of the project is estimated to cost $2.1 billion.
The provincial and federal governments have both committed $600 million to the project. The city is on the hook for the remaining cost.
Construction on the first phase of Ottawa's transit plan is expected to begin in 2013, with a completion date of 2018.
