Human remains found at a construction site in Kingston last week originated in an unmarked family cemetery that was uncovered during a landscaping project in the city's west end.

Kingston police say it appears the remains – a femur and fragmented hip joint – were transported unknowingly with fill to a construction site on Princess Street. Police were notified of the discovery on June 2.

A team of detectives, forensic investigators and archeologists was able to determine the remains belonged to a mature adult.

Burial paraphernalia at the site was examined and it's believed the remains were intentionally buried during the later half of the 1800s.

Kingston police will keep the remains in their possession until they can be properly re-interned.
