They're too young to vote and too young to drive, but sisters Taylor, 11, and Peyton Horning, 9, feel you don't have to be very old to make a difference. The Merrickville girls are collecting hair to help animals caught in the Gulf oil spill.

"We're kids and we don't have a lot of money, and this doesn't involve money," says Taylor.

The young agents of environmental change felt the need to get involved when shocking pictures of oil-covered animals appeared on their television screens.

"We saw the oil spill on the news . . . (and realized) hair could suck up oil," Taylor adds.

So wagon in hand, they go from salon to salon in their town, putting hair in buckets. From humans to pooches.

Once they have enough hair, the sisters send out the locks to be placed into "hair booms" -- locks in pantyhose, an effective contraption to absorb the oil.

The girl's goal is to collect 500 pounds, which would clean 50,000 quarts of water.

"I think I'm going to say I helped make this happen," says Peyton of the legacy, "and it's going to be really good."
