Members of the capital's Aboriginal community are rallying together for a well-known First Nations dancer, her husband, and their three young children.

Beverley Sunday, who performed at the opening ceremonies at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, and Joe Sayer were both in a coma after a car crash late February.

The Gatineau couple has since awoken, though they remain in hospital with serious head injuries.

The couple still faces months of rehabilitation, and they don't have health insurance.

"It's essentially to take care of the kids and to make sure they're well cared for, and that nobody has to worry," said Caroline Gomersall, the event organizer.

Sunday is a popular member in the Ottawa-Gatineau Aboriginal community. She has also become well-known nationally.

"It's about healthy living, and sport, and about a really important moment in the history of our people, about rising up," said Shawn Atleo, the Chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

At the time of the collision, it was uncertain if the couple would recover. However, their condition continues to improve.
