Ottawa residents will soon be able to shop at one of the greenest Wal-Marts in the country, as the world's largest retailer becomes the anchor store of a new retail and residential development at the former site of Laurentian High School.

Smart Centres purchased the property from the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board for $20 million after the school closed.

The new development at the corner of Baseline Road and Clyde Avenue will be a mixed-use project that will include residential units, along with the big box store and other retailers.

Work on the project is underway and is expected to be completed by 2011. Job fairs for retailers setting up shop at the location will be held in September.

Wal-Mart says its new store will be one of the greenest in Canada.
