Downtown commuters in Ottawa and Gatineau who prefer to beat the traffic with pedal power will have more chances to do so in coming years. The National Capital Commission is looking for a private partner to expand its bike-share program, currently leaving the trial stage.

In 2009, more than 5,000 trips were logged on bicycles provided by the cities of Ottawa and Gatineau -- more than enough to convince the cities that there were legs (or wheels) for more bikes.

More than 100 bicycles will be offered this summer at between six and 10 stations. In 2011, the regular service will begin with around 500 bicycles at 50 stations.

The City of Ottawa has said it's looking to cut back on road infrastructure to save money, and offering alternatives to commuters is a part of that.

The NCC will co-ordinate the contract, which could also include some public investment if the private partner wishes to do so.
