An off-duty Ottawa police officer is charged with drunk driving and has been reassigned to administrative duties.

Const. David Dubois was stopped and arrested by off-duty police officers at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday for driving while under the influence of alcohol, according to police.

Dubois is now facing two charges relating to impaired driving.

Although he was off-duty at the time, Ottawa Police Chief Vern White stripped Dubois of his normal duties, and has reassigned him to administrative work.

White stated in a media release that he takes the conduct of his police officers seriously, and they must be held to standards that are consistent with what the community expects of them.

The professional standards section is also investigating the case, and additional charges may be laid under the Police Services Act, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Dubois was released from custody pending a promise to appear in court on May 4.
