A seven-kilometre stretch of the Rideau Canal is open to skaters in time for the first weekend of Winterlude.

The National Capital Commission has opened a stretch of the world's largest skateway from Somerset Street to Dow's Lake. The ice conditions are currently listed as ‘good'.

The NCC hopes to open the remainder of the skateway from Somerset Street to the National Arts Centre by this weekend.

The closed section of the canal is considered unsafe and people are asked to avoid the area.
