Police say a 13-year-old boy will survive after suffering a critical head injury when he was hit by a vehicle in south Ottawa.

The boy was hit by a passing car when he was crossing the street at Walkley Road and Cedarwood Drive near Heron Gate Mall at about 3 p.m. on Thursday. He was not using a crosswalk.

The boy was knocked unconscious and rushed to hospital, where he is currently listed in stable condition.

"All we know right now is that he was crossing from the north side of Walkely Road to the south side after getting off an OC Transpo bus and that's when he was struck by a white Cavalier," said Const. Fay Zouroudis, the lead investigator on the case.

A fierce snowstorm was causing whiteout conditions in several areas of the city at the time of the collision. Zouroudis described the weather as "horrific" and said she believes the driver of the vehicle was driving according to the road conditions.

"I don't believe excessive speed was a factor in this," she said.

Police don't expect to lay any charges. However, they urge both pedestrians and drivers to be aware of each other on the roads.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Ottawa police at 613-236-1222 ext. 2481 or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-TIPS.
