Poll reveals public opinion on Lansdowne Live

Updated: Thu Nov. 05 2009 6:15:28 PM

Although Lansdowne Live is a hot issue at Ottawa city hall, a new poll reveals about 25 per cent of Ottawa residents say they don't know much about the proposal.

"Everyone's got a life. You know, we survey someone -- what do you think they're worried about right now, whether their kid has a cough or whether they've got a job," said pollster Nik Nanos.

The $250-million Lansdowne Live proposal would allow private business to develop on public land. The plan includes a renovated open-air stadium, arena, hotel, retail shops, condos and green space.

One of the most contentious parts of the proposal is a shopping centre, which ranks as a low priority among residents who were surveyed. According to poll results, green space is more important than a soccer stadium and a farmers' market is considered more vital than renovating Frank Clair Stadium.

Although the poll gives city council an insight into what people are thinking, Nanos said several factors need to be considered before council makes a decision on the project.

"If city council makes its decision based on this poll, I will be very disappointed," he said.

Council will hold public delegations on the redevelopment of Lansdowne Park on Nov. 12. The city is expected to make a decision on the project by the end of next week.

Citizen of Ottawa should think of future resident who want a new football/soccer stadium and who are willing to watch football or soccer at their own expence

Stefan Polacek
WE NEED AN OPEN AIR STADIUM TO COMPETE IN WORLD CLASS EVENTS.

JeanFitzgerald
I believe that residents living around the landsdown stadium should have the right too feel that they donot want this plan to go through as it will cause a lot of noise and lots of problem with transit.I know if I owned a home around there I certanly wound not want this. just leave well enough alone.

Marilyn McGregor
What is the big hurry to make a decision about Lansdowne? Look how long we have been waiting for a transit system!! If "Developers" are involved that can only mean one thing - greed. Why not make the decision to take down the stadium - that should be a no brainer if it is in as bad shape has the City says it is, it should be condemned. The rest can wait until we deal with more serious issues. Get our priorities straight. There obviously is no hurry for the stadium, as we still don't have a football team. When we do, why not combine it with a soccer field which seems to the up and coming sport and locate it close to wherever the transit system will be set up & let the owners assume the responsibility & expenses. If they can make money good for them, if not, it should not be the taxpayers concern.

I don't usually respond to these issues, but like a lot of my neighbours we are tired of hearing the same old, same old & would like Council to get the priorities straight & deal with serious issues. It's just unfortunate that City Hall is a ship without a captain, e.g. there is no leadership!

Dennis R
As usual this is nothing but a big joke, they pretend to want our opinion but in the end will do as they please just as they and all other council members have done in the past, I must say though this is the worst city council I have ever seen in all my 67 years.

You don't have to take my word for it just go look at Landsdowne, it's gone at least most of it is, try and find the Band Shell, the Pure Food Bldg, the Curl-O-Drome, the McElroy Bldg, the Bldg. that held all the equipment for the kids park swings and all that stuff Gone.

This was our park and they replaced it with their park and now charge us to play ball there, charge us to park there when we want to support thr 67's or any other event going on there so I say this to you!

What they will do is throw up a cheap stadium (not covered) that can only be used part of the year a bunch of condo's, a farmers market that will import most of it's produce from china and other places cause they can't grow here 12 months of the year and please don't tell me the farmers will spend millions to build green houses and force feed and grow food for us that is un natural and way to costly plus we couldn't afford to buy it in the end. Thr City and Minto Wins We Once Again Loose as usual.

So please go have your last look at Landsdowne it is going the way of the DODO Bird thank to big business and our idiot City Counsel!!!

The probleam is the glebe does not own landsdown. All of them moved there knowing there is a football stadium and a arena. The big probleam is some feel at one point it was a park which is not the truth.THey say this bid would destroy part of ottawa history.Yet alot of those if they get there way are doing the same thing in terms turning it into a park.Landsdown needs to be fixed a new arena maybe some more green space a minor football stadium etc.

I feel the same way about green space and the atrts.People want it they should pay for it on there own.

What is the hurry you ask the civic centre is falling a part and ottawa can not afford to lose another rink. They should and have to focous more on minor sports and less on other things such as the arts etc.

Tim
First of all the Mayor going to push it down our throats to help his business friends.....taxpayers should not be paying anything to private business owners who are going to gain everything in this venture......
As far as The City of Ottawa spending 4 million a year to maintain Landsdowne....Sell the whole space outright...let private business foot the whole bill and put any money back into the City's coffers...Maybe it can pay down some of the other huge money blackhole projects they have running....I'm seriously thinking about moving out of this City.....maybe you should too

Steve in Ottawa
Lets get on with the re-development of Landsdowne Park. This is a run down City facility with no long term future as long as the bureaucrats and politicians at City Hall keep talking about it. They have no vision whatsoever. A group of business men have come forward with a viable proposal. It is their idea and it is a good one; if anyone else has a better plan, then they have had more than enough time to come up with a viable alternative. For the people in the Glebe; Landsdowne has been in existence for over a hundred years and you bought a house next to a sports stadium. You knew what you were getting into. If you don't like it, then move. It is better to have a decent facility for ALL of the people in Ottawa, than to keep going with all of this useless talk, talk. You would think we were a city full of bureaucrats or something. Cut the whining and get building.
