Two men have been charged with the first-degree murder of a 26-year old woman north of Bancroft after being arrested Monday for an unrelated robbery in eastern Quebec.

Steffany Natasha Gardiner was found dead early Saturday morning on a public beach at Papineau Lake in Hastings Highlands.

Ontario Provincial Police were not immediately able to determine the sex of the victim, who had obvious signs of trauma to her body.

Police identified two persons of interest and began a search, according to an OPP statement.

Sret du Qubec officers in Forestville, a town 200 kilometres northeast of Chicoutimi along the St. Lawrence River, arrested the suspects after a break-and-enter on Highway 138 Monday afternoon.

SQ officers soon learned the men were wanted by the OPP for Gardiner's death.

Charged with first-degree murder are Kevin Robert Ruttan, 21, of no fixed address; and Mark Edward Chapman, 32, of Picton.

They were both held in Quebec pending a court appearance. Arrangements are being made to return the suspects to Ontario.

An autopsy on Gardiner's body was performed on Sunday. No further details about cause of death have been released.
