The tech sector has always struggled to attract women. Many get frustrated with glass ceilings and move on.

But a new organization called Girl Geek Dinners has opened an Ottawa chapter to reflect female success in the social media industry. Their first meeting this Wednesday is already sold out, a mix of speeches, advice, and sharing.

The idea began four years ago in San Jose, California and soon spread to other major cities.

The three women behind Ottawa's Girl Geek chapter are all experienced in social media and say more females are entering the field.

"We've just had a terrific response as we have been blogging and on Twitter, letting people know and they have been contacting us and asking what can they do," said Kelly Rusk.

"It's realizing that your customers are out there and they are using social media, and that you as a company should because it's an easy way to reach them and it's effective as long as you do it right," said Melany Gallant.

According to Statistics Canada, women now outnumber men in the workforce for the first time.

"Social media is about creating communities on line and I think women are better at that than men," said Ian Capstick, a communications consultant who spent a decade on Parliament Hill and now runs the Media Style firm.

"In Canada we have a huge number of people who are very creative and imaginative about social media and most of them are women."

Capstick sparked an online discussion when he a questioned a Twitter-based list of the top thinkers in social media and only two were women.

Reaction to his post included a long list of successful women in social media and he hopes it will convince women to take higher profile within the tech sector.
