A 32-year-old man is charged with attempted murder after a police officer was nearly run over by a stolen Jeep Cherokee in Grenville County early Sunday morning.

The OPP was called to reports of a vehicle theft at a home on Glen Smail Road, south of Spencerville, just before 1 a.m.

The Jeep was soon spotted nearby heading northbound on County Road 44. The driver refused to stop for police and a pursuit began.

A spike belt was deployed on County Road 18 at Weir Road. Two cruisers tried to stop the Jeep, which hit one of the police cars and attempted to hit an officer standing outside, according to the OPP.

The suspect was arrested after police pulled their firearms. No injuries were reported.

Thomas Glen Shields of Edwardsburgh Township is charged with attempted murder, dangerous driving, flight from police, vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, and breach of recognizance. He is being held at the Prescott OPP detachment.
