A west-Quebec adventurer is set to lead a group of five students on a grueling trip to Canada's arctic.

Ray Zahab, who lives and trains in Chelsea, Que., will lead the students on a trek to Baffin Island on Tuesday.

Zahab -- who is known for his extreme adventures, including racing across the desert and travelling thousands of kilometres to the South Pole on snowshoes and skis -- says the group has been organizing for months and is excited for the trip.

"We are almost ready!" he wrote to followers on his Twitter page on Friday. "It's almost time! So excited!"

Among the students making the trip is Tamara Banks, a 19-year-old woman from Lombardy, Ont., south of Ottawa.

Banks and four other students were selected from thousands of applicants from across North America who were vying for the chance to make the grueling trek to Canada's far North.
