Discussions are underway to bring professional baseball back to Ottawa with yet another Can-Am League franchise, CTV News has learned.
A spokesman for local businessman David Butler would not confirm or deny that the Ottawa Stadium Group has been awarded a team in the independent circuit. But he acknowledged there have been discussions with the league and city officials.
The group would like to see the former Lynx Stadium used as a sport and entertainment facility.
This marks the second time that Butler, owner of the Bytown Trolley Company, has tried to bring pro baseball to the capital.
The Can-Am League pulled the plug on the proposed Ottawa Voyageurs franchise in late March because of a slowing economy, along with lack of ownership in Ottawa.
The decision left Lynx Stadium. a city-owned facility on prime real estate just east of the downtown core, empty.
Some councillors advocated tearing down the stadium and selling the land to help fund a new multi-sport facility.
The Voyageurs are the third baseball team to fold in Ottawa. The Ottawa Lynx folded after playing 14 years of baseball in the capital. The Ottawa Rapidz, meanwhile, went under after only one season.
