The influence-peddling trial accusing Ottawa mayor Larry O'Brien is over.

O'Brien was on trial after allegations he attempted to better his chances in the last municipal election by offering opponent Terry Kilrea a position with the National Parole Board.

Justice Douglas Cunnigham heard from O'Brien's defence team on Tuesday.

Defence Lawyer Michael Edelson told the court that Kilrea is smarter than you think and that he works the backrooms.

"He's also dumb like a fox. He's street smart. He's disingenuous and we know that without a doubt," said Edelson.

Edelson also attacked the credibility of Kilrea's testimony by saying he had "selective amnesia."

The Crown acknowledged discrepancies in Kilrea's testimony in closing arguments presented Monday.

But shortly thereafter said "it's not like Terry Kilrea made up the meeting. It doesn't matter that he couldn't remember dates and times."

Closing arguments wrapped up Tuesday.

Justice Douglas Cunningham is expected to hand down his verdict at 10 a.m. on Aug. 12, 2009.

The mayor will continue his leave of absence from city hall until then.
